Abstract

Drying materials in long lengths -In a process of drying and conditioning material in web form, such as paper &c., the paper as it comes from a press or coating machine is formed into festoons and conveyed through the drying- chamber upon poles E, E<1> supported upon endless chains D, D<1>. The poles in the front part of the chamber are spaced wider apart than those in the rear part and the chains are so arranged that the poles are automatically transferred from one chain to the other during their passage, while the paper is subjected to downwardly directed currents of heated air. Adjustable fabric screens G are arranged at the sides of the chamber so as to retain the air in contact with the material and leave spaces at the bottoms of the festoons through which the air is withdrawn partly into an exhaust duct H and partly into a duct I which communicates with a heating-chamber divided into compartments C containing heating- coils of varying intensities. The air then passes through a space F and staggered ports f, f<1>, f<2> into the drying-space. Fresh air is admitted to the circulating fan through an opening controlled by a slide.
