Abstract

An infra-red and ultraviolet radiation absorbing glass composition comprising a base glass composition and a colorant portion consisting of 1.4% to 1.7% (by weight) total iron calculated as Fe 2 O 3 and up to 0.5% of CeO 2 and/or TiO 2 , the percentage of iron in the ferrous state lying within the range of 20% to 40%. The glass produced from such composition has a light transmission greater than 70%, a Direct Solar Heat Transmission of less than 46% and an ultra-violet transmission of less than 38% at a thickness of 2mm or when converted to a thickness of 2mm.

Description

THIN HIGH IRON GLASSES The present invention relates to soda-lime silica glass compositions and, more particularly, to glass compositions which have good solar control and ultraviolet radiation absorption properties. Solar control is a term well known in the art and is used to denote glasses having good infra-red absorption properties. The glasses made from the composition are primarily, but not exclusively, intended for use as flat glasses for vehicle glazing. The present invention also relates to glazing formed from such a composition and to laminated glazing in which at least one of the laminates is formed from the composition of the present invention.
According to the present invention, there is provided a glass composition characterised in that the colourant portion consists of : total iron 1.4% -1.7% CeO2 Up to 0.5% TiO2 Up to 0.5% Ferrous state 20% - 40% the total iron being measured as Fe2O3, the glass having, at thickness of 2 millimetres, the following optical properties : Light transmission (LT) : greater than 70% Direct Solar Heat Transmission : Less than 46% Ultraviolet transmission : Less than 38% A typical base glass composition to which the colourants may be added is: SiO2 68% - 74% (by weight) Na2O 10% - 18% K2O 0% - 5% MgO CaO 4% - 14% Al203 0% - 5% B203 0% - 5% BaO The ferrous content of the glass, expressed as Fe2O3, is determined from the optical density of the glass at 1000no and the extinction coefficient, which latter is given in the book "Colour Generation and Control in Glass" by C. R. Bamford and published by Elsevier in 1977. In general terms, the lower the amount of iron in the colourant portion, the higher proportion of ferrous, as opposed to ferric, iron is required to produce the necessary properties. The converse is also generally true. Moreoever, it is also generally true that the lower the amount of iron, the higher the amounts of CeO2 and TiO2 are required to produce the ultraviolet absorption properties.
The light transmission refers to the visible transmission according to the spectrum of tungsten headlights in motor vehicles which is known as "llluminant A". Direct Solar Heat Trasmission (DSHT) is the direct solar heat transmitted at Air Mass 2 (simulating rays from the sun striking an object at an angle of 300) over the range 300nm to 2100nm.
The ultraviolet transmission is that transmitted over the range 300nm to 400nm according to the Parry-Moon distribution and calculated according to the rectangular rule.
If desired, the composition may additionally contain up to 10pom Cm304 for colour correction purposes. The preferred amount of Fe2O3 lies within the range of from 1.5% to 1.6%. In the most preferred embodiment, the DSHT is less than 45%. Similarly, in the most preferred embodiment, the ultraviolet transmission is less than 36%.
The invention will be further described, by way of illustration only, with reference to the following non-limitative Examples.
5 2 3 4 5 6 7 Fe2O3 1.4% 1.6% 1.60% 1.6% 1.4% 1.45% 1.65 Ferrous State 30.5% 25% 25% 25% 30% 29% 24% CeO2 0.4% 0.1% 0 0.2% 0.4% 0 0 TiO2 0.3% 0.1% trace trace 0.3 0.5 trace Co3O4 0 0 0 0 10ppm 0 0 LT 71.5% 70.0% 70.5% 70.3% 70.5% 70.0% 70.1% DSHT 44.7% 45.0% 45.0% 44.9% 44.9% 44.5% 45 Ttrv 34.0% 33% 34% 33% 34% 34.4% 33% a* -8.8 -8.3 -8.2 -8.2 -8.8 -8.3 -8.1 b* +3.3 +3.7 +3.5 ~ +3.4 +2.5 +4.3 +4.2 The glass may be made in thicknesses other than 2 millimetres. Moreover, the glass of the present invention may be combined with other materials, such as clear glass, to form a laminated structure. This may be of importance if safety or security are major considerations, or if it is desired to modify the characteristics of the glass.
