Abstract

A winching device includes a winch 1, cable 2, which passes around pulley 3, held in cable attachment 6, mounted on removable pin 4. From pulley 3, cable passes around pulley 7 to end of vehicle frame. The cable terminates in a hook or similar device. The winch may operate to give a direct pull by attaching the end of cable to a load or remote fixed point. While still attached by a cable to this point, or by allowing the hook to abut up to the frame, the winch can pull from the opposite end of the vehicle by detaching pulley 3 and drawing it through an aperture in the frame then attaching it to a load or fixed remote point to produce a forward or double pull. Guide rollers (to, fig2) at the front allows the cable to be pulled at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle in both vertical and horizontal planes.

Description

Winching System for Vehicles The invention is entitled "Winching System for Vehicles"and is described by reference to the following text and to figures 1 and 2. Referring to figure 1 crab (1) carries cable (2) which passes around pulley (3) rotatably mounted on removeable pin (4) on bracket (5). Cable attachment (6) is rotatably mounted to pulley 3 so that the two items remain together when pin (4) is removed.
From pulley (3) cable (2) passes around pulley (7) mounted rotatably to the frame of the vehicle, along the length of the vehicle and through guide (8) to terminate in cable attachment (9). Attachment (9) may be an eye (figure 1) or a hook (inset).
Figure 2 shows the arrangement of pulley (3), pin (4), bracket (5), cable attachment (6) and rollers (10).
Rollers (10) enable loads to be applied via pulley (3) at an angle to the vehicle axis.
Operation: To pull a load towards the end othe vehicle carrying pulley (3), pin (4) is removed allowing cable to be paid out as required. If necessary, attachment (9) may be pulled clear of the vehicle and secured to a remote fixed point thereby halving the load reacted by the vehicle/ground interface. To pull towards the opposite end, attachment (9) is used to pull out sufficient cable to connect to the load.

Claims (13)

1. Means of utilising in opposite senses the force produced by the action of a winch on a single cable.
2. Means of varying the point at which said force is reacted in order to reduce frame loads.
3. Means of varying the force exerted via a pulley by a cable by changing the condition of fixity of said pulley.
Amendments to the claims have been fled as follows 1. A vehicle fitted with a winch having a winch cable extend able from the vehicle to apply a pull in one fore and aft direction of the vehicle, and guide means about which the cable can be turned so as selectively to apply a pull in the opposite direction, wherein the guide means comprises: a dismountable guide member at or adjacent one end of the vehicle and about which the cable leading from the winch is turned towards the opposite direction of the vehicle, and fore and aft guide means guiding the cable to the opposite end of the vehicle, and cooperating stop means are provided on the cable and on the fore and aft guide means for stopping recovery of the cable on to the winch in a predetermined direction.
2. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the winch is provided at an intermediate position between the fore and aft of said vehicle.
3. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the dismountable guide member and/or the cable end are provided with means for connection to a load or an anchor point.
4. A vehicle as claimed in claim 3, wherein the connection means at the cable end also form the stop means for stopping recovery of the cable on to the winch.
5. A vehicle as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the fore and aft guide means comprises a tubular member through which the cable passes.
6. A vehicle as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the fore and aft guide means forms part of the chassis of the vehicle.
7. A vehicle as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the dismountable guide member comprises pulley means.
8. A vehicle as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein additional cable guide means are mounted on the end of the vehicle on either side of said dismountable guide member so as to guide the cable when the dismountable guide member is extended out with respect to the vehicle.
9. A vehicle as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein additional cable guide means are provided on the fore and aft guide means at said opposite end of said vehicle for guiding the cable when the cable end is extended out with respect to the vehicle.
10. A kit of parts for a winch arrangement for a vehicle, comprising a winch having a winch cable and being mountable on the vehicle such that the cable is extendable from the vehicle to apply a pull in one fore and aft direction of the vehicle, and guide means mountable on the vehicle and about which, in use, the cable can be turned so as selectively to apply a pull in the opposite direction, wherein the guide means comprises a dismountable guide member intended to be located at or adjacent one end of the vehicle and for turning the cable leading from the winch towards the opposite end of the vehicle so that said cable can be guided to said opposite end, and stop means are provided on the cable for stopping recovery of the cable on to the winch in a predetermined position.
11. A chassis for a vehicle, said chassis being fitted with a winch having a winch cable extendable from the chassis to apply a pull in one fore and aft direction of the chassis, and guide means about which the cable can be turned so as selectively to apply a pull in the opposite direction, wherein the guide means comprises: a dismountable guide member at or adjacent one end of the chassis and about which the cable leading from the winch is turned towards the opposite direction of the chassis, and fore and aft guide means guiding the cable to the opposite end of the chassis, and cooperating stop means are provided on the cable and on the fore and aft guide means for stopping recovery of the cable on to the winch in a predetermined position.
12. A vehicle substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
13. A kit of parts for a winch arrangement for a vehicle, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
1 4. A chassis for a vehicle, suostantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
