Abstract
Caravan steady legs have mountings on the chassis or underfloor adjacent the corners of the caravan and mechanisms for lowering the legs (2) from stowed positions adjacent the caravan floor to downwardly extending positions to engage the ground and support the corners of the caravan against vertical movement. The legs/mountings can flex laterally allowing horizontal movement of the caravan and to brace the legs, cables or chains (1) are provided extending diagonally across the caravan from the mounting for one leg to the foot of the other leg and vice versa to brace the legs against lateral movement. The chains or cables include adjusters (6) to enable them to be tensioned and a ring (8) engages the cables where they cross and is attached to a length of elastic cord (9) under tension of the frame or floor of the caravan to retract the chains when the steady legs to which they are connected are raised.
Description
CARA Zap N VAN STEADYSTABILISERS.
My invention relates to the improvement of the performance of the stabilising legs fitted to caravans. Caravans are fitted with wind down support legs usually at each corner of the van, where they are intended to provide both support and stability. The steady legs are wound down by a horizontal thread and nut mechanism, which opens out a triangulation, which resists horizontal deflection in the same direction as the thread, but not in the other plane. Caravan steadies deflect, when horizontal loads are applied at right angles to their threads and this causes instability of the van and uncomfortable movements for the occupants. On certain caravans two of the steadies are mounted at an angle to each to impart greater stability, however, because the tyre walls of the caravan are highly flexural the caravan still deflects under the influence of the movement of its occupants unresisted by the other two steadies, which being parallel have no horizontal stiffness.
The present invention shown in FIG 2 comprises a cable or chain [1] attached to the upper fixed part of the left steady [2] and also attached at its other end to the foot [3] of the right steady. A similar cable or chain is attached to the upper fixed part of the right steady [4] and connects to the foot of the left steady [5]. Each of the two cable or chains is fitted with a turn adjuster [6] which allows tensioning of the cable or chain after the steady has been lowered to engage with the ground. The adjuster [6] is attached to a length of chain by a hook [7] to allow rapid and more coarse adjustment than the adjuster provides. Where the cables or chain cross at the mid point between the two steadies they pass through a ring [8] which is attached to a length of elastic cord [9]. This cord is attached to the frame or floor of the caravan under tension to retract the cable or chains, when the steadies are wound up into their travelling position.
By triangulating the two steadies and without adding significant weight, the invention restores stability to caravans when parked and is easy to use providing greater comfort for the user.
FIG I Shows a typical caravan stabiliser in both views.
FIG 2 Shows the invention applied to a caravan.
Claims (9)
1. A caravan steady-leg stabilising system comprising cables attached to the top of the left rear stabiliser leg and bottom of the right rear stabiliser leg to tension these against deflections from forces influencing the caravan
2. A caravan steady-leg stabilising system as claimed in Claiml where the cables are attached to the top of the right and the bottom of the left steady legs of the caravan..
3. A caravan steady-leg stabilising system as claimed in Claim 1 where the cables are attached to the steady-legs at the front of the caravan.
4. A steady-leg stabilisation system as claimed in Claim 1 used with trailers.
5. A caravan steady-leg stabilisation system as claimed in Claim comprising straps attached to the top and bottom of the steady-legs.
6. A caravan steady-leg stabilitaflon system as claimed in Claim 1 comprising concentric tubes attached to the top of one steady-leg and the bottom ofthe other.
7. A caravan steady-leg stabilisation system as chained in Claim 1 where the cables are attached to the chassis instead of the top of the steady-leg.
8. A caravan steady-leg stabilisation system as claimed in Claim 1 where the cables, chains, straps or tubes are retracted against the floor of the caravan by a spring or elastic strap
9. A caravan steady-leg stabilisation system as claimed in Claim 1 comprising chains attached to the top and bottom of the steady-legs.
