Abstract

A bookmark comprises a loop of chain or other elongate member 3 having sufficient weight, bulk and flexibility to permit displacement by a wrist movement of the holder of a book 1, in and out of selected open pages 5, the chain being left at a selected page in the book when closed and assisting in the re-opening of the book. The chain 3 may be attached to the book cover 2 by spring clips 4 or hooks and receptors or magentic or adhesive pads. The chain 3 may also carry a bob (6, figure 1c) or ornamentation.

Description

BOOKXARK Bookmarks are well known devices for indicating and assisting in the re-opening of a book at a preselected page.
A manual operation is required to remove the bookmark from its pre-selected place, and to replace it at another pre-selected place. One hand generally holds the book, and the other manipulates the bookmark.
The present invention is directed to remove the manual operations described above and requires only a flicking movement of the wrist to remove and replace the bookmark.
The bookmark consists of a length of flexible material as a ligament, for example only a filament, chain, wire, ribbon, beads, strip and the like, and of plastic, metal, leather, woven or unwoven material or a combination of these, characterised as having sufficient weight to enable it to swing freely, substantially unaffected by air resistance and of sufficient bulk as to assist in the separation of selected pages of a book when placed between them and the book closed thereon, at least one end of the ligament being attached preferably to the exterior of the book.
The means of such attachment may be affixed to any suitable part of the book such as the book covers, spine cover or pages.
The mode of action of the bookmark according to this invention is that the ligament hangs outside of the book when the book is being read at a selected page, but by tilting the book away from the reader and with a natural deft wrist movement and flicking motion towards the reader the ligament comes to rest inside the book between the selected page and its facing page.
The book may then be closed.
When re-opening the book, the pages will open readily at the selected page assisted by the ligament and by a natural wrist movement while holding the book the loop may be flicked out from between the pages and hang outside the book. The ligament may then be flicked back into the book at a newly selected page by a similar wrist movement, as before. During the above operations the book may be held throughout using one or both hands.
The word "book" includes any assembly of pages or sheets.
The invention comprises: The invention is a bookmark comprising a ligament characterised in having sufficient weight and flexibility to permit displacement by a swinging motion in and out between selected pages of an open book when attached thereto and of sufficient bulk to assist in the separation of the said selected pages when closed thereon, attachment means to the said book.
The ligament and or the attachment means may advantageously carry printed matter, images, logos, ornamentation.
Advantageously for general use, the attachment means may comprise at least one spring clip engageable with a selected part or parts of a book, the ligament being attached to the said spring clips by a knot or adhesive for example, the ligament and clips are then readily re-usable on another book.
The attachment means may comprise for particular uses, of at least two co-operating parts, one attached to the book and the other to the ligament by convenient means, such co-operating parts may consist of interfering hooks and receptors, magnetic or adhesive pads for example.
In one embodiment the ligament is a loop pendant from the means of attachment.
The ligament may have a weight or bob attached to provide the above characteristics.
The ligament may be supplied to a user in different lengths to suit different book sizes or other requirements, or so supplied in over-long length to be cut to the size required by the user with provision and or instructions for affixing to the means of attachment to a book.
A first embodiment is now described.
Fig. 1 refers.
Fig. Ia The book 1 is shown open at a selected page 5. Book covers 2 which may be of hard or paper back variety have ligament 3 attached to clips 4.
Fig. Ib shows the book open at a selected page 5 with the ligament 3 flicked by a wrist movement on the book 1 so that the ligament 3 rests inside the book 1 at the selected page 5.
Fig. Ic shows the ligament 3 attached to clip 4 which has been placed in position on the cover 2. The clip 4 may be of any convenient shape such as a square and large enough to carry printed matter.

Claims (9)

1. A bookmark comprising a ligament characterised in having sufficient weight and flexibility to permit displacement by a swinging motion in and out between selected pages of an open book when attached thereto and of sufficient bulk to assist in the separation of the said selected pages when closed thereon, attachment means to the said book.
2. A bookmark as claimed in Claim 1 where the ligament is made from at least one of a filament of woven or unwoven material, metal plastic, beadwork, wire, chain.
3. A bookmark as claimed in Claims 1 and 2 where the said attachment means is at least one spring clip engageable with a selected part of the said book and to which the ligament is affixed.
4. A bookmark as claimed in Claims 1 and 2 where the attachment means consists of at least two co-operating parts including at least one of hooks and receptors, magnetic pads, adhesive pads.
5. A bookmark as claimed in any previous claim where a bob is attached to the ligament.
6. A bookmark as claimed in any previous claim where the ligament is in the form of a loop.
7. A bookmark as claimed in any previous claim where at least part of the bookmark carries at least one of printed matter, images, logos, ornamentation.
8. A bookmark as claimed in any previous claim where the ligament is cut to the length required by the user.
