Abstract
231,444. Ges. f³r Linde's Eismaschinen Akt.-Ges. March 31, 1924, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Separating gaseous mixtures by liquefaction.-In the separation of a gaseous mixture by partial liquefaction under pressure, the more easily liquefiable constituents after the main quantity has been separated out by condensation at a low temperature, are removed by washing out with a neutral liquid solvent, the vapour of which replaces them. The liquid solvent, for example liquid nitrogen, may be used as a refrigerating liquid in the separation of the gaseous mixture for example water gas. Compressed water gas is passed through a counter current heat exchanger 1 and a refrigerating coil 2 into a column 4 wherein it is washed by a descending stream of liquid nitrogen obtained from an air-liquefying plant. The carbon monoxide present is condensed out, and the hydrogen passes out mixed with some nitrogen through the heat exchanger 1. The liquid nitrogen and carbon monoxide collecting in the column is expanded through a valve 6 into a vessel 3 where it cools the coil 2 and is evaporated, the vapour passing off through the heat exchanger. When it is desired to obtain hydrogen practically free from nitrogen, the gas escaping from the top of the column is passed through a coil in a refrigerator 7 wherein nitrogen is boiled in vacuo.
