Abstract

A double hull tanker comprising a double bottom space and double walled side ballast tanks is provided with a valved suction pipe line arrangement, whereby in the event of both skins of the hull bottom being ruptured oil is removed from the damaged region and pumped to an undamaged storage region in said tanker. Pipe lines 1 which open into the double bottom spaces via valves 2 run within the side ballast tanks, whereas pipe lines 4 communicate with adjacent double bottom spaces via valves 5. Adjacent bottom spaces are interconnected via valves 3. In case of damage to the pipe lines 1 and 4, valves 6 and 7 are fitted to isolate the damaged part.

Description

OIL RETRIEVER SYSTEM FOR DOUBLE HULL TANKERS This invention relates to a double hull tanker carrying a bulk cargo such as an oil.The main objective of this concept is,collect, save and retrieve oil spill from a double hull tanker in the event of the inner and outer bottom plates have been ruptured, ripped or holed through grounding.
The invention comprises either of pipe lines arranged individually, one line to each segregated double bottom space,or two main lines (1), one each side connected to the main cargo pumps and running withen the double sided ballast tanks, with their suction ends penetrating the ballast tanks bottom. Each end is fitted with a valve (2) .Fig.(1) Two or more valves (3)are fitted to the plate floor in order to connect or separate the double bottom spaces.
Two stripping lines (4) are connected to the main stripping pumps or the ballast pumps. One each side running through the double bottom and are branched to each doubit bottom space. Valve (5) is fitted to each suction end.
Valves (6) & (7) are fitted to the retrieving and stripping lines to separate the damaged part should a damage occur to the lines ,Figs. (2) & (3).
All valves are operated either manually from the deck or automaticlly from the control room.
The design is described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 A cross section of a double hull tanker shows the retrieving and stripping lines, suction ends and control valves.
Figure 2 A three dimension section shows the lines and valves arrangement.
Figure 3 Side and top plans shows the lines, valves and pumps arrangement.
In a double hull tanker being ruptured, oil leaks and escapes to the double bottom spacetthen.it will seek an access to rise to the water surface.
In order to minimize the damage,by opening valves (2) & (3) , oil will follow the nearest access through valves (2) & (3) to the undamaged adjacent double bottom space as well as through the retrieving lines (1).
Should the undamaged space become full, oil could be transfered from one space to the other via the valves (3).In the mean time, useing the cargo pumps and the retrieving lines to pump out the spill from the damaged region to other cargo or ballast tanks as well as the sripping arrangement from the fully undamaged double bottom spaces until the hydrostatic balance between fluid pressures inside ond out outside the hull are equal.
Should a damage occur to the retrieving and stripping lines valves (6) & (7) are to isolate the damage part.

Claims (8)
