Abstract

A demountable packing case (1) comprises a plurality of first panels (2) and second panels (3). Panels (2) have stepped peripheries (4). Panels (3) do not have stepped peripheries. The stepped peripheries (4) of panels (2) are formed by the panels comprising two superimposed layers (5, 6) of plywood, layer (5) being of larger area than layer (6). The non-stepped peripheries of panels (3) interfit with the stepped peripheries (4) of panels (2) so that inward movement of the end panels (3), relative to the top, side and bottom panels (2) is substantially prevented.

Description

PACKING CASES This invention relates to packing cases and is particularly concerned with packing cases for housing delicate components such as electrical equipment, and comprise a plurality of demountable panels held together by spring clips applied externally.
It has been found that, when such a packing case is empty, the spring clips exert inwardly directed forces on the panels, which is undesirable, as it tends to distort them.
The present invention seeks to overcome this problem.
According to the invention, a packing case comprises first panels with stepped peripheries which interfit with second panels without stepped peripheries, so that relative movement between interfitting first and second panels is substantially prevented.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a plan view which shows the sides and end panels of a packing case; Figures 2 and 3 are side views of top and bottom panels of the packing case; Figure 4 is an external view of a side panel, viewed in the direction of arrow IV of Figure 1; and Figure 5 is a side view of a spring clip used to secure the panels together.
In the Figures, Figure 1 is reduced in scale compared with Figures 2, 3 and 4.
With reference to the Figures, a demountable packing case 1 comprises a plurality of first panels 2 and second panels 3.
Panels 2 have stepped peripheries 4. Panels 3 do not have stepped peripheries. The stepped peripheries 4 of panels 2 are formed by the panels comprising two superimposed layers 5, 6 of plywood, layer 5 being of larger area than layer 6.
The panels 3 are identical except that the external surfaces of panels 2 forming the sides of the packing case 1 are reinforced by securing battens 7 and 8 of softwood to those surfaces. See Figure 4.
As best illustrated by Figure 1, the non-stepped peripheries of panels 3 interfit with the stepped peripheries 4 of panels 2 so that inward movement of the end panels 3, relative to the top, side and bottom panels 2, represented by arrows 10, is substantially prevented.
Similarly, with reference to Figures 2 and 3, inward movement of the top and bottom panels 2, represented by arrows 11, is substantially prevented by the interfitting panels 3.
Any tendency towards these inward movements result from inwardly directed forces applied to the panels, exerted by removable spring clips 12 (Figure 5) securing the panels together.
The invention avoids the need to place force-resisting blocks within the packing case 1. Such blocks would consume otherwise usefully occupied space and could also, by transferring externally applied impact forces, result in damage to the contents of the packing case 1.

Claims (5)

1. A packing case comprising first panels with stepped peripheries which interfit with second panels without stepped peripheries, so that relative movement between interfitting first and second panels is substantially prevented.
2. A packing case as claimed in claim l, wherein the first panels comprise a pair of side panels, and the second panels comprise a pair of end panels.
3. A packing case as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein each of the first panels comprise two superimposed layers of material, with one layer of larger area than that of the other layer.
4. A packing case as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein removable spring clips are used to secure the panels together.
5. A packing case, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
