Abstract

A motor vehicle door assembly 10 comprises a door 12 mounted on a door frame 14 of a vehicle. The assembly further comprises a door limit arm 18 connected at one end 20 to one of the door 12 and frame 14 and at its other end 22 slldeably to the other of the door 12 and frame 14. A gas filled strut 42 is connected between the slideable end 22 of the limit arm 18 and the other of the door 12 and frame 14. The gas filled strut 42 resists movement of the door 12 and is particularly useful for preventing free movement of the door under gravity into a closed or open position where the vehicle is standing on sloping ground.

Description

A MOTOR VEHICLE DOOR ASSEMBLY The invention relates to a motor vehicle door assembly and particularly to a side-hinged motor vehicle door assembly.
Passenger carrying vehicles suitable for on-road and off- road use are becoming very popular with the motoring public. With such vehicles, it is quite common to have a side hinged door on the rear end of the vehicle and, to save space inside the vehicle, a spare wheel for the vehicle is frequently carried on the outside of the door.
On such vehicles the rear door is normally quite large and can be difficult to handle. In such a case, the door may tend to swing open naturally once it has been unlatched and the inertia of such a heavy door can be difficult to control particularly when the weight of the door is increased by the addition of the spare wheel.
An object of the pres-ent invention is to provide a door assembly which reduces the foregoing problem.
According to the invention there is provided a motor vehicle door assembly comprising a door pivotally mounted on a body of the vehicle and a door check means to limit opening of the door and to resist movement of the door, the door check means comprising of an arm pivotally connected at a first end to one of the door and the body and having a second end slideably connected to the other of the door and the body for limiting opening movement of the door and a gas filled strut connected to the second end of the arm to resist sliding movement of the second end of the arm.
The second end of the arm may be slideably connected to a slide track fixed to the door and the first end of the arm may be pivotally connected to the body.
The second end of the arm may be slidingly engaged with a slot in the slide track which limits movement thereof.
One end of the gas filled strut may be attached to the door.
The gas filled strut may have a cylinder connected to the door and a piston rod extending therefrom which is connected at one end to the second end of the arm.
Preferably, the arm is slideably connected to the door and the gas filled strut is also mounted on the door.
With such a construction, the strut can be hidden within the door structure which is useful from the point of view of protection for the strut and overall aesthetics.
A motor vehicle door assembly in accordance with the invention will now be described in detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig 1 is a perspective view of a motor vehicle door assembly in accordance with the invention with the door open and an interior panel of the door removed, Fig 2 is a perspective view of part of the door assembly shown in Fig 1 shown in a closed position, Fig 3 is an elevation of the slide track looking in the direction of arrow III in Fig 1 and Fig 4 is a cross section of the slide track shown in Fig 3 on the line IV-IV in Fig 3 with a door limit arm in position on the track.
In Fig 1 a motor vehicle door assembly generally indicated at 10 comprises a door 12 pivotally mounted on a door frame 14 of a vehicle by means of hinges 16. The hinges 16 are arranged one above the other to define a generally vertical hinge axis for the door 12.
A door limit arm 18, constituting part of a check means, is pivotally mounted at one end 20 to the door frame 14. A second end 22 of the arm 18 is slideably received in a slide track 24 which is mounted by means of bolts 26 on the door 12.
The slide track 24 is illustrated in more detail in Figs 3 and 4 and is elongate having a mounting section 28 thereon formed with spaced apart apertures 30 for the bolts 26. A protruding lip 32 extends from the bottom of the mounting section 28 and runs along the length thereof. An elongate bar 34 is carried by projections 36 arranged one each end of the mounting section 28. The bar 34 and the lip 32 define an elongate horizontal slot 38 which receives the second end 22 of the arm 18 (see Fig 4).
As shown in Fig 4 the second end 22 of the arm 18 rests on the lip 32 and is retained in the slot 38 by means of a pin 40 having a head 40a. The pin 40 extends through a bore 41 in the second end 22 of the arm 18 and is suitably secured to one end of a gas filled strut 42 of well known kind as described below. Contact between the head 40a and the bar 34 prevents the second end 22 of the arm 18 slipping off the lip 32.
The gas filled strut 42 is mounted on the door 12 so as to lie adjacent the track 24. A cylinder 43 of the strut 42 is securely mounted at a free end 44 thereof to the door 12. A piston rod 46 extends from the cylinder 43 and has a boss 48 at a free end thereof in which the pin 40 is suitably secured to attach the gas filled strut 42 to the second end 22 of the arm 18.
In operation, and with the door 12 closed, the second end 22 of the arm 18 will lie at the end of the slot 38 furthest from the hinges 16 and the piston rod 46 of the gas filled strut 42 will lie retracted within the cylinder 43. As the door 12 is opened, the end 22 of the arm 18 will slide along the slot 38 in the track 24 towards the end of the track 24 adjacent the hinges 16 thereby causing the piston rod 46 to be withdrawn from the cylinder 43.
When the second end 22 of the arm 18 reaches the end of the slot 38 the door 12 is open to the maximum extent to which it can open and further movement is resisted by interaction between the second end 22 of the arm 18 and the end of the slot 38. In this way no excessive axial load is imposed upon the piston rod 43 of the gas filled strut 42 thereby reducing the risk of damage to the strut 42 due to overtravel or bottoming out. The rate of opening of the door 12 is controlled by the resistance to door movement exerted by the gas filled strut 42 upon the second end 22 of the arm 18.
It will be appreciated, that the strut 42 will offer a resistance not only to the opening of the door 12 but also to closing as it resists movement in both directions of the second end 22 in the slot 38.
When the door is moved manually towards its closed position, the second end 22 of the limit arm 18 will move back along the track 24 against the resistance of the strut 43 towards the end remote from the hinges 16.
It will be appreciated that in use the gas filled strut 42 will be hidden by the trim attached to the door 12 which is not shown in the figures. This location is particularly advantageous in that the strut 42 is protected from damage and does not detract from the aesthetics of the vehicle.
It will similarly be appreciated that the gas filled strut can be connected at either end to the second arm although the arrangement shown is preferable. Similarly the gas filled strut and slide track could be mounted upon the body in which case the arm would be pivotally connected to the door and that the mechanism could be operable at the top edge of the door rather than the bottom edge as shown in the figures.
