Abstract

In a rolling bearing unit with a rotary speed sensor and comprising a stationary (outer) ring 4 and a rotating (inner) ring or ring assembly 2 with rolling elements 3 in raceways provided on the respective rings, and a tonewheel 13 attached to the rotating ring assembly so that magnetic variations on a radial portion of the tonewheel cooperate with an axially facing pick-up 21 carried by a cover 16 attached to the stationary ring 4, a first seal ring 9 is provided in the space between the radial portion of the tonewheel and the adjacent rolling elements to seal the gap between the inner and outer rings, and a second seal ring 29 is provided, having a base portion fixed to the inner edge of the cover 16 and a tip portion intended to make sliding contact with a member provided axially adjacent the bearing unit and rotating with the rotating ring, e.g. a constant velocity joint 28. A harness 42 is used to take out a speed signal from the pick-up via a cable connected to the sensor, the cable being taken out firstly in an axial direction and then circumferentially in a cover portion which is of reduced axial length, in order to prevent interference betwen the harness and the constant velocity joint.
