Abstract
A Hydraulic Brake Activator consisting of a cylinder 2 with an integral mounting flange 4 which bolts directly in place of the original air activator, without alteration, welding or cutting of the axle. The piston of the activator having an operating rod 5 pivoted upon it so allowing the operating rod to follow the arc of the pivoted operating lever when the brakes are applied.
Description
THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A HYDRAULIC BRAKE ACTIVATOR, TO REPLACE
AN AIR ACTIVATOR.
BRARES ON LARGE AXLES ARE COMMONLY APPLIED BY AN AIR ACTIVATOR,
SOMETIMES IT IS DESIREABLE TO APPLY THE BRAKES HYDRAULICALLY,
TYPICALLY WHEN AN EX-ROAD GOODS TRAILOR IS USED IN AGRICULTURE.
WHEN FITTING A HYDRAULIC ACTIVATOR; BECAUSE THE PISTON (1)
DOES NOT HAVE THE FLEXIBILITY OF THE DIAPHRAGM (12) IN AN AIR
ACTIVATOR (11) TO ALLOW THE OPPERATING ROD (5) TO FOLLOW THE
OPPERATING LEVER (6) AS THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED (14) - FIG. 2.
A HYDRAULIC ACTIVATOR HAS TO BE PIVOTED (13) AT ITS ATTACHMENT
TO ALLOW THE WHOLE ACTIVATOR TO FOLLOW THE ARC OF THE OPPERATING
LEVER AS THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED -FIG 3.
TYPICALLY THIS WOULD INVOLVE CUTTING THE ORIGINAL MOUNTING (8)
WITH AN OXY-ACETALENE CUTTER AND WELDING A FRESH MOUNT (15) IN
PLACE.
AS EACH CONVERSION IS TYPICALLY A'ONE OFF', CARRIED OUT BY
THE OWNER OF THE TRAILOR ( A FARMER). THE STRENGTH AND DESIGN OF
THE MOUNTING IS LEFT TO THE JUDGEMENT OF THE PERSON INVOLVED, THE
STRENGTH OF THE WELD HOLDING THE NEW MOUNT TO THE AXLE IS ALSO
SUBJECT TO PERSONAL VARIATIONS OF QUALITY
A SPECIFIC EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION WILL NOW BE DESCRIBED
BY WAY OF EXAMPLE, WITH REFERENCE TO THE ACCOMPANYING DIAGRAMS,
IN WHICH :
FIGURE -1- SHOWS AN AXLE FITTED WITH AN AIR ACTIVATOR.
FIGURE -2- AS IN FIGURE -1- BUT SHOWING CUT AWAY SECTION TO
DEMONSTRATE THE MOVEMENT OF.THE OPPERATING ROD, WHEN THE BRAKES
ARE APPLIED.
FIGURE -3- SHOWS AN AXLE FITTED WITH A TRADITIONAL HYDRAULIC
ACTIVATOR AND WELDED MOUNTING.
FIGURE -4- SHOWS END VIEW OF MOUNTED FLANGE.
FIGURE -5- SHOWS CUT AWAY SECTION OF INVENTION.
FIGURE -6- SHOWS INVENTION FITTED TO AN AXLE.
FIGURE -7- SHOWS AXLE MOUNTING BRACKET REY (1) PISTON (9) BOLT/s (2) CYLINDER (10) THREAD ADAPTOR (3) SEAL (11) AIR ACTIVATOR (4) MOUNTING FLANGE (12) DIAPHRAM (5) OPERATING ROD (13) PIVOT (6) OPERATING LEVER (14) BRAKES ON (7) AXLE (15) NEW MOUNTING (8) MOUNTING BRACKET
ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT INVENTION, NONE OF THESE ALTERATIONS
WOULD BE NECESSARY.
THE INVENTION CONSISTS OF A CYLINDER (2) WITH AN INTEGRAL
MOUNTING FLANGE (4) A PISTON (1) AND SHORT OPERATING ROD (5)
THE PISTON IS SEALED TO THE CYLINDER WITH AN 'O' RING (3)
THE PISTON HAS A SMALL RECESS IN THE END, INTO WHICH THE
OPERATING ROD SITS, THIS ALLOWS THE OPERATING ROD (5) TO FOLLOW
THE ARC OF THE OPERATING LEVER (6) AS THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED.
THIS-MEANS THAT THE ACTIVATING CYLINDER CAN BE RIGIDLY
MOUNTED AS THE ORIGINAL AIR ACTIVATOR HAS.
AS THE CYLINDER CAN NOW BE RIGIDLY MOUNTED AND NOT PIVOTED
FROM ITS FAR END, THIS GIVES OPTIONS FOR MOUNTING THE ACTIVATOR.
THE INVENTION HAS AN INTEGRAL MOUNTING FLANGE ON ITS FRONT END,
ALLOWING IT TO BE BOLTED TO THE ORIGINAL MOUNTING, PROVIDED FOR
THE ORIGINAL AIR ACTIVATOR.
THUS THE PRESENT INVENTION FITS DIRECTLY tN PLACE WITHOUT
ALTERATION TO THE AXLE AND THE EXISTING MOUNT, USING THE EXISTING
BOLT HOLES WITHOUT ANY WELDING OR ALTERATION TO THE AXLE.
Claims (3)
