Abstract
A sparkler system for varying the head size in dispensed beverages in a hygienic manner comprises a sparkler 6 with a plunger 3 operated typically by a lever 1 and cam 2 remote from the beverage. The position of the end 4 of the plunger 3 is adjustable in the dispensing orifice 5 and the head formation is thus jointly determined by the size of supplementary orifices 7 and the size of orifice 5 which is dependent on the plunger 3 position.
Description
HEAD CONTROL SYSTEM FOR BEVERAGES
The invention relates to the dispensing of carbonated beverages such as beers, cider, lager, soft drinks and more particularly to methods of varying the presentation of the beverage.
Carbonated beverages are normally dispensed through a nozzle into drinking containers such as cups, glasses or tankards. It is known that most nozzles, either by design or accident, cause dissolved carbon dioxide and/or nitrogen to be liberated fram the liquid beverage to form a head or froth on the drink.
It is further known that personal or local preferences for the size of the head of froth on a portion of beverage when allied to variations in storage and handling conditions frequently give rise to a desire to manually adjust the size and t,vpe of head formed.
The said adjustment is traditionally performed by screwing a device known as a sparkler along the threaded end portion of the nozzle in order to vary orifice size and shape through which the beverage passes. This solution entails handling a component which is regularly immersed in the beverage and is now the subject of criticism on hygiene and public health grounds.
One other traditional means of performing the said adjustment is by a variable configuration within the tap feeding the dispense nozzle. This has the disadvantage that the variation in head is not generated at the point of exit of the beverage from the nozzle. It is generally accepted that the control is most effective if the variation in head characteristics is generated at the point of exit of beverage from the nozzle.
According to the invention there is provided a plunger which passes down through the nozzle to open or close additional orifices in the sparkler, characterised in that:
the effective sparkler orifice characteristics are
significantly varied if the plunger is raised or
lowered.
the sparkler orifice variation is effected remotely
without manual contact with any component immersed in
the beverage.
the sparkler orifice characteristic may be set to one
of two or more preset positions for the duration of the
dispense or may be varied during an individual
dispense.
By way of example the invention is illustrated in figure i. The control lever 1 is rotated to the required position and, as a result of the interface with cam 2 the plunger 3 is displaced vertically.
The conical end shape 4 of plunger 3 varies in its insertion into orifice 5 in the sparkler 6. As a result the effective orifice size is determined by the degree to which plunger end shape 4 is inserted into orifice 5.
Referring now to figures 2,3 and 4 the invention is shown in figure 2 with the control lever 1 fully relaxed and the conical end 4 sealing the orifice 5, as a result of which the head formation is determined entirely by supplementary orifices 7.
Figure 3 shows the control lever 1 partially rotated on the cam 2 causing the conical end 4 to partially withdraw from the orifice 5, as a result of which the head formation is jointly determined by the effective orifice 4 to 5 and the supplementary orifices 7.
Figure 4 shows the control lever 1 fully rotated on the cam 2 causing the conical end 4 to be withdrawn fran the orifice 5, as a result of which the head formation is dominated by the effective orifice 4 to 5.
Claims (4)
1) A head control system for the adjustment of the effective orifice in the sparkler at the end of a beverage dispense nozzle by means of a plunger remotely operated fram a point not in contact with the beverage.
2) A head control system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the plunger is displaced by a cam action with pre-determined dwell positions.
3) A head control system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the plunger is displaced by a cam action to continuously variable positions.
4) A head control system as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 or 3 wherein the sparkler contains supplementary head generation orifices not controlled by the system.
