Description

2311593 E2ADLAMP FOR AN AUTOMOBILE "LOYING DICHROIC FILTER The present
invention relates to an automobile headlamp, and more particularly, to an automobile headlamp with improved light emission efficiency and adapted to provide protection for a lens by employment of a dichroic filter.
A conventional automobile headlamp, as shown in FIG. 1, is described in U.S. Patent No. 5,237,489. In FIG. 1, a headlamp comprises a lamp 11 as a light source, a reflection mirror 12 for reflecting forward light emitted from the lamp 11, a diaphragm 13 installed in front of the lamp 11, and a projection lens 14 installed at the light-emitting end of the headlamp.
Besides visible rays, the lamp 11 also emits infrared rays, including thermal rays, and ultraviolet rays. The thermal infrared rays deform the projection lens, and the shorter wavelength ultraviolet rays may produce harmful effects on the is human body or on other living things.
Moreover, the rays of light which are emitted directly forward from the headlamp of a driven car interfere with the eyesight of oncoming drivers. The conventional headlamp therefore employs the diaphragm 13 or a blackened projection lens 14 to diminish the direct emission of light. Doing so, however, unavoidably reduces the quantity of light emitted from the headlamp.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a headlamp having improved light-emitting efficiency and providing protection of a lens, in which infrared rays and ultraviolet rays are intercepted by employing a frosted dichroic filter.
1 To achieve the above object, there is provided an automobile headlamp according to the present invention, comprising a lamp, a reflection mirror, installed around the lamp, for reflecting light emitted from the lamp, a dichroic filter installed in front of the lamp, for intercepting infrared rays and ultraviolet rays of said light, and a projection lens for projecting the light transmitted through the dichroic filter forward.
Also, a frosted portion, which is treated to be frosted, is formed in the middle of the dichroic filter.
Specific embodiments of the present invention are described in detail below, by way of example, with reference to the attached drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a sectional view of a conventional automobile headlamp; and is FIG. 2 is a sectional view of an automobile headlamp employing a dichroic filter according to an embodiment of the present invention.
FIG. 2 shows an automobile headlamp employing a dichroic filter according to an embodiment of the present invention. In FIG. 2, light emitted from a lamp 21, i.e., a light source, is reflected to a projection lens 23 located at the front end of the headlamp by a reflection mirror 22 installed around the lamp 21.
A dichroic filter 24, which intercepts infrared rays and ultraviolet rays and which allows visible rays only to pass therethrough, is installed between the lamp 21 and the projection lens 23.
Moreover, a frosted portion 24a, which is treated so as to be frosted, is formed in the middle of the dichroic filter 24 to 2 prevent rays of light directly from the lamp from being emitted f rom the headlamp. Since the light emitted f rom the lamp 21 passes through and is refracted by the frosted portion 24a, there is no interference with a driver's eyesight caused by the emission of direct rays of light. Further, as the frosted portion 24a does not intercept the light emitted from the lamp 21, but passes it with refraction, the quantity of light ultimately transmitted through the projection lens 23 is increased over that obtained in the headlamp with the diaphragm 13 (in FIG. 1) or with the blackened projection lens 14 (in FIG. 1), thus providing improved efficiency in utilization of the light emitted from the lamp 21.
As described above, the automobile headlamp according to embodiments of the present invention can intercept infrared rays is which may deform the projection lens and ultraviolet rays which may produce harmful effects to the human body by employment of the dichroic filter. Furthermore, by forming the frosted portion in the middle of the dichroic filter, the automobile headlamp according to an embodiment of the present invention can prevent accidents caused by interference with the eyesight of drivers arising from emission of rays of light direct from the lamp, and can also provide decreased electric power consumption by improvement in the efficiency of utilization of light emitted from the lamp.
