Abstract
A plant tie (14) comprises two coils (14a), (14b) of springy material secured together. The tie is particularly useful as a tree tie to attach trees to supports such as stackes or other anchorages.
Description
Improvements in or relating to tree ties
The present invention relates to tree ties. Tree ties are used to attach trees to support such as stakes or other anchorages.
Whilst the present invention is more particularly concerned with ties for trees and saplings it can also be used for other plants such as roses, shrubs, flowering plants and vegetable plants.
Many varieties of tree and plant ties are available. A common draw back with many plant ties is that the attachment to both plant and support such as a stake can be inconvenient and time consuming. Also once in position the tie may not allow for growth of the plant.
The present invention seeks to provide a plant tie which can be easily attached both to plant and stake and which allows for growth of the plant.
Accordingly the present invention provides a plant tie consisting essentially of two coils of springy material which are secured together.
The coils can be of the same size or of different sizes.
The tie can be formed from a single length of suitable material or a number of separate lengths which can be joined together to make the complete tie.
A suitable material can be an extruded or moulded plastic material such as Nylon.
Alternatively the material can be formed from a spring metal and coated with a plastics material.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrated diagrammatically one form of tree tie according to the present invention.
Referring to the figure there is shown a plant or tree (10) and a supporting stake (12).
The tree (10) is attached to the stake (12) by one or more ties (14). The tie (14) comprises two coils (14A, 14B) of plastics material which are attached to one another and are formed for example by moulding or by extrusion. The two coils (14a) and (14b) can be both right hand or both left hand or one can be right hand and the other left hand.
In order to use the tree tie (14) the coil (14a) is attached to the tree (10) in the following manner. The coil at the free end of the complete coil (14a) is fitted to the tree in the same manner as fitting a key on a key ring. The coil (14b) is attached to the stake (12) in the same manner. Alternatively the coil (14b) can simply be placed over the top of the stake (12).
The coil (14b) can be provided in a number of sizes so that it is a close or tight fit to a range of sizes of stake. It will be appreciated that the coil (14b) as well as being fitted to a stake can also be attached to any other convenient support structure e.g a trellis.
The tie (14) can be formed from a single length of plastics material and can be made either by extrusion or by moulding or any suitable manufacturing technique provided that the coil has springiness.
Alternatively the tie can be made from for example spring wire and coated with a plastics material.
It will be appreciated that as the tree grows in diameter the coil which will be a relatively firm grip on the trunk of the tree will expand and therefore will continue to grip the tree without biting into the bark as the coil will simply open up as the tree grows.
In stormy weather the tie will continue to hold the tree in place but will give with the wind and not harm the tree.
It will also be appreciated that the length of tie between the tree and the stake will act as a buffer to prevent chafing between the tree and stake.
In areas where strong winds prevail, it will also be appreciated that two ties can be used, such that one is inverted, giving a crossover pattern where the ties meet.
Claims (7)
1. A tree or plant tie comprising two coils of springy
material.
2. A tie as claimed in claim 1 formed from a flexible plastic
material.
3. A plant tie as claimed in claim 1 formed from wire coated
with a plastics material.
4. A tie as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in
which the coils are of different diameters.
5. A tie as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in
which the coils are of the same hand.
6. A tie as claimed in any one of the preceding claims 1 to 4
in which the coils are of the opposite hand.
7. A plant or tree tie constructed and arranged for use and
operation substantially as herein described.
