Description
Roofing Material
This invention concerns a roofing material and, more particularly, a roofing "felt" of the kind (hereinafter termed "of the kind referred to") adapted to be positioned beneath tiles or slate to provide secondary protection against ingress of rain, wind and snow, particularly if the overlying tiles or slates become dislodged or broken.
A traditional ;;felt" of the kind referred to manufactured to British Standard 747, type IF, comprises a hessian backed paper felt which has been saturated with bitumen. Such is quite heavy, weighing some 1.5kg per square metre, and is also less resistant to mechanical damage than would be desirable.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel "felt" which overcomes, at least to some extent, the disadvantages associated with the traditional felts.
According to the present invention, there is provided a roofing ;'felt" of the kind referred to comprising a woven sheet of polypropylene material which is coated with bitumen under conditions such that, whilst the integrity of the woven sheet is maintained to give mechanical strength, it nonetheless melts into the bitumen to give an inseparable bond.
The woven sheet may be coated on one side only.
The woven sheet may be coated on both sides.
The woven sheet may be coated by passage over a roller whose lower part is immersed in a bath of molten bitumen.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which shows, by way of example only, plant for the production of one form of roofing "felt" embodying same.
The "felt" comprises a sheet of woven polypropylene fabric (of basketweave for example) woven from multifilament strands of polypropylene and typically having 2 warps per cm and 5 weft picks per cm, which is coated on both faces with bitumen.
As shown in the drawing, the woven fabric 10 is drawn from a roll 11 thereof and guided through a nip formed between rollers 12 and 13. The lower part of the roller 13 is immersed in a bath 14 of molten bitumen.
The fabric 10 now coated with bitumen on one face is inverted by guide rollers 15 and 16 fed via tensioning rollers 17 to be guided through a further nip formed between rollers 18 and 19. The lower part of the roller 19 is immersed in a further bath 20 of molten bitumen.
Finely granulated material such as granulated limestone or talc is applied to the upper face of the fabric 10 (which is now coated with bitumen on both faces) by an applicator 21. The coated fabric is led around a first cooling roll 22 and finely granulated material is applied to its other face by a second applicator 23 before the fabric is passed around a second cooling roll 24.
Bitumen has a comparable melting point to that of polypropylene and the transit speed of the sheet is adjusted and controlled to ensure that whilst an adequate take-up of bitumen to form an effective seal over the surface ofthe composite is obtained the integrity of the woven sheet is retained to give mechanical strength but with sufficient melting of the polypropylene into the bitumen to ensure an inseparable bond.
Typically, a "felt" manufactured as described above will have a weight of as little as 0.5 kg per square metre whilst having mechanical strengths greatly in excess of those of traditional "felts".
In a modification the fabric 10 is coated on one face only and then has a weight of about 0.45 kg per square metre.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
Claims (6)
1. A roofing "felt" of the kind referred to comprising a woven sheet of polypropylene material which is coated with bitumen under conditions such that, whilst the integrity of the woven sheet is maintained to give mechanical strength, it nonetheless melts into the bitumen to give an inseparable bond.
2. A roofing felt according to claim 1 wherein the woven sheet is coated on one side only.
3. A roofing felt according to claim 1 wherein the woven sheet is coated on both sides.
4. A roofing felt according to any preceding claim wherein the woven sheet is coated by passage over a roller whose lower part is immersed in a bath of molten bitumen.
5. A roofing felt according to any preceding claim wherein a fine granular material is applied to the bitumen coated face of the fabric.
6. A roofing felt according to any preceding claim having a weight in the range of from 0.45 - 0.5 kg per square metre.
