Signguard construction showing unit unactivated Concept Signs are a common item in todays world. So much so that many loose their impact when trying to get their messages across. We only read them when it suits us because they don't always catch our eye.How many times have we fallen down a step, banged our heads, left a door open, accidentally activated an alarm or unknowingly walked into a secure area only to find that there was a sign telling us not to do so all along.
similarly, this fact appears to be also true for would be intruders. Signs claiming that alarms are in operation or that security guards are on patrol may not deter the intruder from entering and subsequently combining a crime. This may be because a static sign on its own is not convincing enough or that it is not visible due to poor light at night, and so on.
Therefore a sign is needed that attracts the attention of people and sub-consciously forces them to read and acknowledge the displayed message.
It should be acceptable to both the commercial and domestic market and should be constructed for mainly external use, as well as being suitable for internal use. It should be aesthetically pleasing to operate in a variant of surroundings but noticeable enough to cause intrigue. It should be capable of displaying a wide range of legends and messages.
Sign guard outline specification A box sign fitted with integral flashing light which illuminates a visible, preferably readable, message at pre-set intervals controlled by a passive infra-red detector.
The light produced from the sign will only be enough to highlight the message.
The message is constructed so that it can only be read when illuminated. (Remains blacked out when not activated) The passive infra-red detector is mounted and concealed within the Signguard construction.
Signguard is constructed in a material suitable for generally all environments.
Signguard is operated via mains (230V a/c) electricity.
Sign guard Construction Chassis: 5mm Perspex in black Approximate size (H x W x D) 309mm x 463mm x 92mm (Drawing 1) Removable section of trim secured by 3no. 6mm screws for removal of legend.
(Drawing3) Note. Fixing holes are not provided and are to be drilled by the installer.
Legend: Secret Sign Perspex with lettering in coloured semi transparent vinyl secured by perspex trim fixed to the chassis.
(Drawings 2 and 3) Note. For the purpose of this application only it is assumed that sufficient light is present to illuminate the legend lettering in drawings 2 and 3.
The standard legend for this specification reads:-WARNING You Have Been Detected! Alarm systems in operation on these premises.
However, the legend will read according to the customers requirements.
Electrical: lino. 3 way plastic mains voltage rated connector complete with filse carrier.
lino. Passive Infra-red detector with LED indicator and "on" time of approximately 5 minutes.
lino. 230V-12V transformer. (Ifrequired) lino. 12V/230V operated flashing unit.
(Drawing 4) 2no. 12V/230V Light fitting.

Claims (5)

Claims
1. A presence detector arranged to display a visible, preferably readable, message when activated by a detector.
2. A presence detector as claimed in claim 1. where the legend is not readable unless illuminated from within the Signguard unit. When the message is not illuminated it appears as a black section of perspex. (Drawing 5)
3. A presence detector as claimed in claim 2. where the legend can read to the customers requirements.
4. A presence detector as claimed in claim 3. which is not constantly lit when activated.
The legend will flash at a pre-set rate for a duration of approximately 5 minutes where it will then reset and retum to a stand by mode.
5. A presence detector as claimed in claim 4. which incorporates an integral fitting Passive Infia-red detector to detect the approach of intruders. (Drawing 4)
