Description

ACCESS PORT This invention relates to ports and, more particularly, to access ports such as cat flaps or letterboxes which provide a passageway through a door or partition whereby discrete entities may transfer or be transferred from one side of the door or partition to the other side.
According to the present invention there is provided an access port allowing passage of discrete objects through a door or partition, the access port including a first member defining a passage through the door or partition and being provided with means for engaging one side of the door or partition, and a second member provided with means for engaging the other side of the door or partition and being adapted to be pushed into locking engagement with the first member.
The first member may be of any appropriate shape, for instance, it may have a square, rectangular or round cross-section.
Typical applications of the access port of the present invention are as a letterbox or a cat flap.
An access port of the present invention may be made of any suitable material, examples being plastics and metal or a combination thereof.
Preferably the outer surface of the first member is provided with integral projections or depressions and the second member has corresponding means which are capable of locking engagement with the said projections or depressions.
More preferably the first member is provided with at least one outwardly extending projection. Such a projection or projections may extend transversely about the whole of the periphery of the outer surface of the first member. For example, the projections may be in the form of a plurality of axially spaced circumferential ribs. The second member may be provided with one or more inwardly extending teeth for engagement with at least one of the said ribs.
The present invention will now be described by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of an access port of the invention which is shown in position within a door; and Figure 2 is a perspective view, mainly in the direction of the arrow shown in Figure 1, of the access port of Figure 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, an access port in accordance with the present invention is formed of two members made of a plastics material. A first member 1 is in the form of a sleeve or liner which defines a passage 3. The passage is of rectangular cross-section and the cross-sectional size is such that letters or small parcels may pass through the passage, the access port being in use as a letterbox.
The outer surface of first member 1 is provided with axially spaced integral ribs 5 extending around the entire periphery of the member.
Member 1 is also provided with an outwardly extending peripheral flange set at one end thereof.
The access port also includes a second member 9 which provides a cap for the end of the first member remote from flange 7. Member 9 includes a short sleeve section 11 of a width such that the member 9 may be push-fitted over the end of the first member as indicated in the drawings. Sleeve 11 is provided with one or more inwardly directed teeth 13. In an alternative embodiment the spaced-apart teeth 13 may be replaced by a substantially continuous rib. As indicated in Figure 1, the teeth 13 are for locking engagement with one of the ribs 5 of the first member.
The second member 9 includes an integral outwardly extending flange 15 of similar dimensions to flange 7 of the first member.
The second member 9 may be open at its centre, the opening 17 being of substantially the same shape and dimension as the passage 3.
Alternatively, the second member 9 might be provided with a pivotal flap (not shown) which may be raised to pass letters through the access port and which acts as a closure means to the passage 3 when the access port is not in use.

2. An access port according to Claim 1 in which the first member has a square, rectangular or round cross-section.
3. An access port according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 in the form of a letterbox or a cat flap.
4. An access port according to any of the preceding claims and made of plastics or metal or a combination thereof.
