Abstract

A safety helmet comprises a monococque shell 1 and a shoulder plate 2. The helmet is so designed that in the event of an accident the shoulders will take the greater proportion of the forces, rather than the neck. The helmet is secured by straps 4. Air vents 6 are provided. The whole helmet will be constructed of a rigid material.

Description

MOTORCYCLE AND RACING CAR SAFETY HELMET This invention relates to a motorcycle and racing car safety helmet.
There are many types of helmet, but none of them covers the neck or reaches any part of the trunk. Therefore, there is no protection to the neck, and the neck is very vulnerable: damage to the neck can leave a person paralysed.
According to the present invention the safety helmet is extended downwards encompassing the neck as well as the head, and the base of the helmet forms a plate which rests on the shoulders, chest and back. The shoulders take the weight of the safety helmet, rather than the head, so that the head carries no extra weight and is free to move within the shell. This new safety helmet is a monocoque shell, the part covering the head being lined with protective padding, whilst a separate padded ring is worn around the neck under the helmet. The safety helmet has a forward vision aperture; is provided with air vents; is secured by adjustable straps.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows safety helmet from front view; Figure 2 shows safety helmet from right hand side view; Figure 3 shows safety helmet from rear view; Figure 4 shows safety helmet from underside or 'entry' view.
Motorcycle and Racing Car Safety Helmet Referring to the drawing the safety helmet comprises a monocoque shell 1 that is worn over the head and on the shoulders as a means of protection.
It has an entry aperture 9 underneath so formed as to provide fitting the helmet by placing it over the head with the shoulder plate 2 across the body front (chest) to rear (back), lowered, and rotated through 900 so that shoulder plate 2 rests on the shoulders and vision aperture 3 is to the front. Securing straps 4 are then placed under the armpits and put in the fixing clip 5 on the front of the shoulder plate. The air vents 6 are a permanent part of the shell moulding with streamliner covers 7 and insect-proof grills 8.
Removal of the safety helmet is just the reverse procedure.

Claims (4)

1. A safety helmet, extended downwards, to encompass the neck as well as the head, the base of the helmet forming a plate which rests on the shoulders, chest and back. The shoulders take the weight of the safety helmet, rather than the head, so that the head carries no extra weight and is free to move within the shell.
The safety helmet is a monocoque shell, the part covering the head being lined with protective padding whilst a separate padded ring is worn around the neck under the helmet. The safety helmet has a forward vision aperture; is provided with air vents; is secured by adjustable straps.
2. A safety helmet as claimed in Claim 1 wherein two securing straps are fixed to the rear of the shoulder plate. These straps pass beneath the armpits, this section of the strap being padded, and fix into clip holders on the front of the shoulder plate beneath the chin protrusion.
3. A safety helmet as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 wherein air vents are located on the sides of the safety helmet at mouth level to provide adequate ventilation. These are covered with a streamliner trunking and insect-proof grill.
4. A safety helmet as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 and Claim 3 wherein adequate protective padding is provided for upper head and jaw/chin area allowing the head adequate movement left/right.
A separate padded ring, i.e. not attached to the helmet, is provided to be worn around the neck - the ring is placed around the neck before the helmet is fitted.
