Description
SINK MODULES
The present invention relates to sink modules, and, in particular, integral drainer and bowl sink modules.
Integral sink modules have been in use for some time. However, these are often formed from a single material. Each material commonly used has certain disadvantages, for example composite materials stain easily especially in the bowl area, and metallic materials for example stainless steel are easily scratched.
According to the present invention a sink module manufactured for installation in a worktop comprises a first portion forming a bowl and being of a substantially stain resistant material secured to a second portion forming a drainer and being of a substantially scratch resistant material.
The stain resistant material may be a metal, e.g. stainless steel.
The scratch resistant material may be a resin-based material e.g. an epoxy or acrylic resin material, or other suitable plastics material.
The drainer may be integrally formed with a frame which supports the bowl. The drainer and frame may be formed by moulding.
The bowl may be secured to the drainer frame by means of a sealant, in particular a silicone sealant. The bowl may be secured to the frame by means of suitable mechanical fasteners, e.g. brackets or clips.
These may be used as an alternative to or in combination with the sealant.
In a further embodiment, the bowl may be moulded into the drainer frame.
A hole may be provided in the drainer, facilitating the removal of water therefrom. The drainer may be contoured to further facilitate removal of water.
The sink module may also comprise a tap unit, and be adapted to be inset in a worktop.
By using a sink module of this kind, problems with staining of the bowl or scratching of the drainer can be reduced.
Each sink module may comprise one or more bowls in combination with one or more drainers.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a plan view of a sink module according to the present invention.
The sink module 1 comprises a drainer 2 integrally formed with a frame 3 in which bowls 4 and 5 are supported and secured. The drainer and frame are moulded of an epoxy resin, and the bowls manufactured from stainless steel. The bowls are secured to the drainer frame using clips (not shown) at each corner of the bowl in conjunction with a silicone sealant. The drainer frame comprises a continuous peripheral lip 7, to assist in preventing water from spilling over the edge of the module.
The drainer 2 comprises a drain hole 8 through which water can drain away. The drainer further comprises an indented portion 9.
Fingers 10 of the indented portion extend into the drainer and form ridges therebetween. The indented portion also extends around the periphery of the drainer. The hole 8 is situated in and approximately flush with the indented region 9, which indentation facilitates the draining away of water.
The frame 3 further comprises a hole 11 in which a tap unit (not shown) may be situated. The complete sink module is inset in a worktop 6 when installed for use.
