Abstract

A gripping apparatus comprises a substantially rigid support 1, means 3 for attaching an implement 7 to the support 1 and attachment means 2, such as a sleeve with hook and loop fasteners 4, 5, to hold the rigid support against the user's wrist. The device enables the user, for example an arthritis sufferer, to hold an implement securely without having to exert a firm grip on the implement itself.

Description

APPARATUS FOR GRIPPING AN IMPLEMENT The present invention relates to an apparatus for gripping an apparatus which can be used by people who have limited use of their hands, such as sufferers from arthritis, in order to complete various tasks which may require a strong grip of an implement.
One known device comprises a thin strap which wraps around the hand and has an elongate pocket stitched to the strap for receiving the handle of an eating utensil, such as a knife or a fork.
However, in such cases only a weak grip is required when using the utensil and this device is not suitable for tasks where the implements involved are heavy, difficult to handle, have large handles or where the handles have to be gripped firmly eg. when lifting a saucepan or using a small gardening fork.
According to the present invention, there is provided apparatus for gripping an implement, the apparatus comprising a substantially rigid support, means for attaching an implement rigidly to the support, and means for holding the support against the wrist of a user so that the implement is rigidly held in position relative to the hand without the user needing to grip the implement firmly.
Other preferred features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying claims.
The invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus with a gardening fork attachment, and Figures 2 and 3 are respective front and rear perspective views of the apparatus being worn by the user.
Figure 1 shows a support 1 which is formed from a substantially rigid material such as metal, wood or plastic. The support 1 is attached to a sleeve 2 of heavy fabric such as canvas by bonding. The strip could be slid into a pocket in the sleeve. One half of a two-part connector 3 is rigidly fixed to the end of the support. The other half 3 of the connector is rigidly attached to an implement such as a trowel 7.
The sleeve 2 is provided with a plurality of hook and loop fasteners 4 and 5 such as Velcro (TM) so that the sleeve can be wrapped around the wrist of a user, and held firmly in place, as seen in Figures 2 and 3. The sleeve 2 has an inner surface 8 (which contacts the wrist and hand when the device is in use) and an outer surface 9. Strips of hook fasteners 4 are stitched or bonded at intervals along one longitudinal edge of the outer surface. A pad of loop fasteners 5 is stitched or bonded near the other longitudinal edge of the sleeve 2 so that the hook fasteners 4 contact the loop fasteners 5 when the sleeve is closed around the wrist of the user. The surface area of the loop fasteners 5 is sufficently large to contact the hook fasteners disposed at the other side of the sleeve 2.
The apparatus is worn by opening the sleeve and placing the hand in it so that the end of the support 1 connected to the connector 3 rests in the palm of the hand (see Figure 3). The sleeve 2 is wrapped firmly around the hand and wrist. A protrusion 6 is passed between the user' s thumb and forefinger in order to provide a more secure fit of the sleeve 2 to the user' s hand. The hook fasteners 4 are then brought into contact with the loop fasteners 5 (see Figure 2).
The user may then select an implement, such as a gardening fork or trowel 7, which is provided with the other half of the two-part connector 3', in place of the usual grip or handle. By strapping the support 1 to the wrist, the connector 3 fixed to the apparatus engages the other connector 3' provided with the fork so that the fork may be held without the need to grip the handle at all or at least firmly.
Various forms of connector may be used, such as a screw fit or a bayonet fit connector. Another form of connector which may be used allows the implement to be rotated about its central axis and subsequently fixed in a desired position. The connector illustrated is a quick release connector of the type used on garden hoses. It is preferred that the connector be readily mated and released with a single hand, and not require much dexterity.
A range of implements, for gardening, housework, etc, is provided, each implement having a connector part 3' fitted to it.

Claims: -
1. Apparatus for gripping an implement, the apparatus comprising a substantially rigid support, means for attaching an implement rigidly to the support, means for holding the support against the wrist of a user so that the implement is rigidly held in position relative to the hand without the user needing to grip the implement firmly.
2. Apparatus for gripping an implement as claimed in claim 1, wherein the support comprises a wrap-around sleeve which, in use, wraps around the wrist and/or hand of a user, and means is provided to hold the sleeve securely on the wrist and/or hand.
3. Apparatus for gripping an implement as claimed in claim 2, wherein the sleeve is openable and closeable by means of a fastener disposed along opposite edges of the sleeve.
4. Apparatus for gripping an implement as claimed in claim 3, wherein the fastener is a hook and loop fastener.
5. Apparatus for gripping an implement as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the apparatus includes a said implement, the attaching means comprising a two part connector, a first part being provided on the support, and the second part being provided on the implement.
6. Apparatus for gripping implements substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
