Abstract
A screw cap 2 for a filter housing 1 includes a centring means 7 and a snap connection 8, 10 for rotatably and radially non-elastically mounting an annular filter insert 9 contained in the housing. The centring means 7 is preferably a round bolt moulded in the cap interior and it is received in a recess in a holding closure member 8 which slide fits in the filter insert 9. The outer periphery of the closure member 8 snaps into holding clips 10 of deformable material, which are carried by the screw cap. The cap may include a pipe socket 4 with a hexagonal profile for receipt of a tool, a stopper 6 being inserted in the socket so as to reinforce the socket.
Description
Tltle: SCREW CAP FOR A FILTER HOUSING
This invention relates to a plastic screw cap for a filter housing.
Such screw caps are known, for example, from DE 43 44 588 Al and from EP 0612549. In the latter case, the inner contour of the screw cap is shaped outwardly with a bulge in the region of the pipe socket in a first design. The transition from the pipe socket into the base of the bell of the screw cap therefore has to have a relatively thick wall so the forces of an applied fitting tool can be absorbed and the resultant deviation of the base of the bell from its ideal shape is at least partially compensated by pressure chambers. However, accumulations of material in plastic parts are undesirable for various reasons. Among other things, they adversely affect the ideal distribution of tension and therefore decisively reduce the resistance of the plastic screw cap to pulsation.
A second design according to that document affords advantages with respect to the internal contour of the screw cap. However, the integrally moulded pipe socket, on whose external surface designed as a polygon, a fitting tool acts has to be dimensionally stable in order to be able to absorb the radially acting forces occurring during release by means of the tool. Undesirable accumulations of material in the transitional region to the base of the bell with the above-mentioned drawbacks are therefore unavoidable.
The present invention is based on the idea of not adversely affecting, in terms of strength, a specific form of the screw cap base required for strength in the deformability by, in particular, an attachment existing in the form of a thickwalled pipe socket for a fitting tool.
The present invention thus aims to deal with the problem of reinforcing the radially resilient mounting of the filter insert on the screw cap.
A further aim of the invention is to provide a screw cap for a filter housing which enables replacement of an exchangeable annular filter element to be achieved as simply and inexpensively as possible.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a plastics screw cap for a filter housing in which an annular filter insert in the interior of the cap is separable therefrom and can be rotatably mounted round the screw axis thereof, wherein the rotatability is provided by a snap closure in which one connecting member has an annular web and the other connecting member has radially resilient holding clips which axially fix this annular web and wherein centring means for radially nonelastic mounting of the annular filter insert relative to the screw cap are provided between the screw cap and the annular filter insert.
Preferably, the centring means consist of a round bolt moulded on the interior of the base of the screw cap which may be engageable in a recess in the adjoining end face of the filter insert or in a recess in a holding member which is adapted to be connected to the filter insert with a sliding fit.
The holding member is desirably designed as a closure cap for the radial interior of an annular filter insert.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, an attachment extends axially from the exterior of the screw cap and serves for the radial support of a stopper which is adapted to be introduced into a pipe socket coaxially surrounding the attachment with radial spacing, and to serve as a means for reinforcing said pipe socket.
The invention will now be described in detail, by way of example, with reference to the drawings1 in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through a detail of a filter housing with one embodiment of a cap according to the invention screwed on;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the cap shown in Fig. 1 but with inserted parts omitted; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cap shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows a screw cap 2 according to the invention screwed onto a filter housing 1. An attachment piece 3 for the insertion of a tool is provided at the end of the screw cap to permit the screw cap to be fitted to and removed from the filter housing. The attachment piece 3 consists of a pipe socket 4 with a hexagonal external profile shaped on the base of the screw cap 2. An attachment 5 is shaped directly in the centre of the screw cap 2 axially outwardly on its base. A stopper 6 is inserted radially internally and externally positively into the interior of the pipe socket 4. This stopper 6 is mushroom-shaped, the mushroom head resting on the pipe socket 4 in the inserted state of the stopper so as to form a positive radial seal from the exterior. The stopper 6 is inserted into the pipe socket 4 in such a way that no distortion of material occurs in the pipe socket 4. On the other hand, the fit is such that the stopper 6 is held permanently in the pipe socket 4. A catch connection, for example, can be selected of which one catch element 11 is shown in the interior of the pipe socket 4 in Fig. 2. The stopper 6 is preferably made of plastics material as is the screw cap 2.
A round bolt 7 which is used for the holding and radially non-elastic mounting of a closure cap 8 on the end face of an annular filter insert 9 is moulded centrally in the interior of the screw cap 2. The closure cap 8 is mounted rotatably on the round bolt 7 substantially without play. The closure cap 8 is axially fixed via holding clips 10 of radially deformable material which are formed on the screw cap 2 and adapted to be snapped onto a peripheral annular web on the outer periphery of the closure cap 8. The closure cap 8 is rotatable relative to the screw cap 2 within this snap connection. The annular filter insert 9 can be fitted onto a cylindrical region of the closure cap 8 with a radial seal.
Forces of a fitting tool are distributed over a relatively large region by the stopper 6 within the pipe socket 4 so the wall thickness of the pipe socket 4 can be extremely small overall and in particular in the transitional region to the base of the screw cap.
