Abstract
An Orthopaedic Pillow is constructed from a material or combination of materials with certain compression and supportive qualities that dissipate localised pressure whilst not deforming the fundermental pillow shape Figure 1. The invention encompasses compressed and or elongated geometric forms which have the ability to fulfil the inherent function of said pillow shape. Core-construction materials encompass urethane foams, ethylene foams, synthetic fibres, down, organic or synthetic gellatinus substances. The pillow may be an inflatable structure. Whether the user is resting supine, prone or lateral said pillow has a shape allowing temple support, neck support and shoulder support Figure 2 (not shown) whilst allowing the areas about the ears, cheek bones, nose, occipitalis and the eyes to be free from contact of said pillow structure, Figure 3 (not shown).
Description
ORTHOPAEDIC PILLOW
An Orthopaedic Pillow is a term used in general to describe a support with definate structural benefits to hold the head and ne=k in a comforting position when the user is resting in a horizontal position.
What follows is a definition of terms which can be applied to the understanding of the term Orthopaedic Pillow.
Orthopaedics the branch of surgeory dealing with the correction of deformaties in bones and muscles.
Orth/ortho combining forms denoting straight or normal, correct or corrective.
Orthosis... .. .being defined as an external device used to emiliate physical
disabilities for a supportive, preventitive or corrective purpose.
Orthotic... ... the science of orthopaedic appliances and their use.
The physical material that an orthopaedic pillow may be constructed from in general is based around an expance of material,or combination of,with certain compression and supportive qualities that aid the head and neck in its muscular-skeletal alignment when the user is supine.Noteably the head and neck having full surface contact with pillow.
According to the present invention the orthopaedic pillow supports the area radial to the nuchal and radial to the cranium.Whilst allowing the areas between to be free from support and contact of the main underlying structure of said pillow.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with the aid of drawings in which
Figure 1 shows a view from above of said pillow shape.
Figure 2 highlights the main contact areas of said pillow about the users head.
Figure 3 illustrates the main areas about the head which are free from support
and contact of the main underlying structure of said pillow shape.
Claims (2)
- 2.1 The orthopaedic pillow according to the present invention provides temporal support, neck support and shoulder location.2.2 Noteably the areas about the ears,cheek-bones,nose,occipitalis and the eyes free from contact of the main pillow structure.2.3 Said pillow shape allows the user to rotate in either direction while supine, prone or lateral, without hindering the function of said pillow.2.4 Said pillow allowing full air-circulation about these areas 2.2.2.5 Said pillow not hindering or obstructing nasal breathing facilities.2.6 Said pillow not hindering or obstructing oral breathing facilities.2.7 Reduced surface area elliviates surface friction and pressure about 2.1/2.2.2.8 Consistant pressure dissipated about contact areas 2.1.2.9 Inherent dimensional variations allows said pillow to support a variety of head and neck sizes.
- 2.11 The pilllow-case effectively reduces surface friction between the main underlying pillow structure and the users head and neck area.2.10 The pillow-case covers the structure in such a way as not to hinder the fundermental function of said pillow.
