Abstract

A microwave dish is disclosed comprising a base (11) having a layer (13) incorporating a microwave heatable material, ferrite. The layer has a main region (15) towards the centre of the layer and a peripheral region (14). The main region has a greater proportion of microwave heatable material than the peripheral region so that in use a greater amount of microwave radiation is absorbed by the main region than by the peripheral region.

Description

Microwave Dish The present invention relates to a microwave dish.
It has long been a problem, when cooking a circular food product in a microwave oven, that the periphery of the food product tends to cook faster than the centre causing the food product to cook unevenly. This is a particular problem when cooking a product such as pizza.
It is an object of the present invention to mitigate this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a microwave dish comprising a base having a layer incorporating a microwave heatable material, said layer having a main region towards the centre of the layer and a peripheral region, said main region having a greater proportion of microwave heatable material than said peripheral region so that in use a greater amount of microwave radiation is absorbed by the main region than by the peripheral region.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a microwave dish according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a detailed cross-sectional view of the region I of Figure 1 of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings wherein similar numerals have been used to indicate like parts, there is shown a microwave dish generally indicated at 10 according to the invention. The microwave dish 10 comprises a circular pan 11, of diameter D equal to approximately 275mm, having an upturned lip 12. The pan 11 is fabricated from metal ranging in thickness D1 from around 0.25mm to 3.Omm, Figure 2.
A microwaveable layer 13 comprising a mixture substantially of high temperature vulcanising silicone rubber, a material with a high thermal resistance, and, for example, ferrite, which heats when stimulated by microwave radiation used in conventional microwave ovens, is applied to the underside of the pan 11.
The layer 13 varies in depth from the periphery towards the centre of the pan. The layer 13 includes an annular main region 15, extending radially from the centre of the pan from 12.5mm, D1, to 145mm, D2. In the present embodiment the main region 15 has a depth D3 of not more than approximately 3mm. An annular peripheral region 14, extends approximately 45mm from the main region 15 to the periphery of the pan. The region 14 has a depth D4 approximately 40% of the depth D3. The layer 13 also includes a central region 16 extending across a diameter of 25mm, D5, in the centre of the pan and its thickness is reduced by a depth D6, approximately 30 of the depth D3.
In use, the dish may be placed in a microwave oven and pre-heated. The main region 15, being of greater thickness than the peripheral region 14, absorbs a proportionally greater amount of microwave radiation and heats to a temperature of approximately 2400C in comparison to a temperature of approximately 1900C in the region 14.
The reduced thickness of the central region 16 means that it receives proportionally less radiation than the region 15. Thus, if the centre of the oven has a "hot spot", the region 16 will not overheat.
Once the dish is pre-heated, a pizza or other food product, not shown, can be placed on the dish, and the oven can be set to cook the pizza over a required period. The main portion of the pizza lying in register with the region 15 attracts proportionally less radiation than the peripheral region of the pizza.
However, the main portion of the pizza receives a proportionally greater amount of heat through conduction, through the pan 11, from the higher heat store contained in the main region 15. Thus, even cooking of the pizza is provided by the dish.
It will be seen that in an alternative embodiment of the invention, the main region 15 could incorporate a higher density of ferrite than the peripheral region 14.
In this case the layer thickness could remain constant, yet the main region 15 would still in use absorb a greater amount of heat than the peripheral region.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments described herein which may be modified or varied without departing from the scope of the invention.
