Abstract
In a storage system for multi-media data, independent primary data items, such as videos A, B, C, and redundant data DD are stored on disc drives 210, 211 and, if one drive 210 fails, requested data are reconstructed from the redundant data and the data on the other drives 210. The storage system may be of the redundant-array-of-inexpensive-disks (RAID) type having a control unit 213 with provision for retrying acesses, logging the retries, suspending access to a faulty drive, adding an extra drive and updating redundancy data.
