Abstract
A tool holder 10 includes a variable size clamp 12 pivotally mounted on a handle 14. The clamp comprises two plates 12A, 12B with a compressible strip of material 26 which are forced together by screws acting on studs 18, 20 affixed to one of the plates. A cup 30 is mounted on an arm 16 of the clamp to hold the end of a tool such as a paint brush 32. Arm 16 is pivoted to handle 14 at a pivot point A. An extension piece may be inserted into a recess 34 in handle 14 to increase the reach of a user.
Description
Tool Holder
This invention relates to tool holders and in particular a holder for paint brushes and rollers1 and wallpaper scrapers.
A common method of applying paint to walls and ceilings is the application of paint by means of a roller or brush. The roller method provides a rapid and efficient method of covering a majority of the wall and ceiling but there are nearly always areas where the roller cannot apply the paint eg into the corners, around light fittings and into mouldings.
These areas have to be finished by hand using an ordinary paint brush of a suitable size.
A further problem arising as a result of the necessity for hand finishing or applying paint by a brush is that many people do not like using step ladder or similar to reach the ceiling or the higher parts of the walls which require hand finishing or painting by a brush.
There are arrangements whereby extension poles can be fitted to rollers so that the higher part of the wall and ceiling can be roller painted whilst standing on the floor.
The present invention seeks to provide a tool holder to which extension pieces can be fitted and which can retain a range of paint brushes, rollers and other tools of various sizes so that any work can be completed whilst standing on the floor.
The present invention further seeks to provide a tool holder which can be used to retain a scraper so that the function of removing wallpaper and paper applied to the ceiling can also be accomplished whilst remaining standing on the floor.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a tool holder including a handle, a variable sized clamp, pivoting means to allow the clamp to swivel on the handle, the pivoting means having locking means to fix the clamp in position with respect of the handle.
The clamping means may conveniently comprise a screw and wing nut.
The clamp can include two plates one of the plates having two threaded studs mounted on the plate, the other plate being formed with two openings aligned with the studs, each plate having attached thereto a length of deformable material.
The clamp can be mounted on an arm of the pivoting means, the arm being attached to one of the plates of the clamp.
The handle can have a recess arranged to receive extension pieces.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig 1 shows a side elevation of one form of tool holder according to the present invention;
Fig 2 is a front elevation of the tool holder shown in Fig 1; and
Fig 3 is an exploded perspective view of the tool holder shown in Fig 2.
Referring to the drawings a tool holder (10) comprises a variable size clamp (12) pivotally mounted on a handle (14).
The clamping means (12) comprises two plates (12A) and (12B), the plate (12A) being secured to the free end of an arm (16).
The arm (16) is pivotally mounted on the handle (14) at (A), and can be locked in position by a screw and wing nut (not shown).
The plate (12A) is provided with two threaded spaced apart threaded studs (18, 20) which are welded to the plate (12A).
The plate (12B) is provided with two openings (22, 24) which are spaced apart at the same distance as that between the studs (18, 20). The studs (18, 20) are a clearance fit in the openings (22, 24).
Each plate has a strip of compressible durable material (26) attached hereto, the function of which is described below.
The arm (16) has a ring (28) welded to it, and retains a cup (30) which provides a seat for a tool handle.
In order to use the tool holder to retain a paint brush, the handle of an appropriately sized paint brush (32) is positioned in the clamp (12), with the end of the brush handle located in the cup (30), and the handle between the studs (18, 20) on the plate (12A). The other plate (12B) is passed over the studs, so that the plate (12B) engages the plate (12A) by the strips (26). When the plates are urged together, the plate (12B) will tip relative to the plate (12A) and because of the close fit between the studs (18, 20) and openings (22, 24), the plate (12B) will lock in position on the threads of the studs, holding the paint brush handle securely in place.
Although the studs are conveniently provided with threads, they can be formed with projections or the like, which need not be helically formed as a thread, to enable the clamping plates to lock together.
The clamp can then be positioned with respect to the handle by releasing the nut and rotating the arm (16). When the desired position is reached the nut is tightened, the arm (16) being positively located with respect to the handle (14).
An extension piece or a number of extension pieces to make up the appropriate length can then be inserted into a recess (34) in the handle (14) enabling the user to reach the parts of the walls or the ceiling which require to be painted or finished without the necessity of step-ladders or anything similar.
The clamp (12) is sized so that it can receive paint brush and roller handles and other tool handles of a range of shapes and sizes. It will be appreciated that by appropriate positioning of the handle (32) within the clamp and the pivoting action of the arm (16) with respect to the handle, the brush can be located to reach any area requiring finishing.
The tool holder can also be used to receive a scraper when removing wallpaper or similar coverings from parts of the walls or the ceiling which would otherwise require the use of step-ladders.
