Abstract

A hydraulic power steering pump is driven from a vehicle engine through an electromagnetically-controlled clutch. The clutch is engaged by springs or permanent magnets and disengaged electromagnetically to ensure that the pump will operate if the control fails. Control of the clutch may be in response to steering wheel torque or vehicle speed. The clutch can be wet or dry, single plate or multiplate.

Description

VEHICLE STEERING HYDRAULIC PUMP DRIVES Background to invention Power assistance for vehicle steering systems are usually provided by a hydraulic pump driven from a rotating element of the vehicle s power plant.
The pump operates even when little or power assistance is required, for example when the vehicle is moving in a substantially straight line. Thus, for much of the vehicle operating time power is wasted and the system is subjected to unecessary wear and tear.
To overcome this problem it has been suggested that the power steering hydraulic pump should be driven independently by means of an electric motor when conditions require power assistance. Such a drive system has the disadvantage of high current consumption and unecessary complication to achieve the objective.
The present invention According to the present invention the hydraulic pump which provides power assistance for a vehicle steering is driven directly from the power plant via an-electromagnetic clutch. The clutch may be single or multiplate operating in air or immersed in a fluid. The fluid could be the system hydraulic fluid itself.
The clutch may be mounted externally or internally with respect to the pump body. Alternatively it could be mounted on the driving end of the pump drive.
The clutch is energized when required from the electrical system of the vehicle and the pump is then driven normally Alternatively the clutch may be engaged normally by means of a spring or springs or by one or more permanent magnets. Such a clutch would be disengaged by powering it from the electical system of the vehicle.

Claims (5)

1. An apparatus for controlling a hydraulic power steering system to turn or assist turning the steerable wheels of a vehicle, the said apparatus being a dry or wet plate single or multiplate clutch in which the rotatable input member and the rotatable output member are held in engagement by means of springs, permanent magnets or the like. The said clutch may be disengaged by applying an e.m.f to an electromagnet or electromagnets, the force of which oppose that of the springs, permanent magnets or the like. Thus the rotatable input member may rotate freely without necessarily transmitting torque to the rotatable output member.
The control system of the said clutch which is responsive to vehicle speed, torque applied by the driver of the vehicle to the steering column or other enviromental factors is configured to engage the clutch with minimal slip time.
In case of electrical failure of the clutch or associated control system, steering power assistance is available at all times.
2. As claim 1 but where the clutch is incorporated within the casing of the steering hydraulic pump but is separated from the hydraulic system fluid therein.
3. As claim 1 but where the clutch is incorporated within the casing of the steering hydraulic pump and operates in the system hydraulic fluid.
4. As claim 1 but where the clutch, incorporated within the casing of the steering hydraulic pump and operating in the system hydraulic fluid, is so configured that the rotatable input member can transmit a limited amount of torque to the rotatable output member even when the clutch is disengaged.
5. As claims 1,2 and 3 but where the clutch is connected to the driving member eg. a belt pulley on the vehicle power plant instead of being incorporated within or attached to the steering hydraulic pump.
