Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises bitumen and styrene-butadiene block copolymer and optionally a tackifier, sulphur, stearic acid, zinc oxide and tetra-methyl thiuram disulphide. The bitumen and copolymer may be blended and then the copolymer is dynamically partially crosslinked. The adhesive may be used to form a waterproof membrane with the adhesive covered with a release paper sheet.

Description

PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ADHESIVE BITUMEN-POLYMER COMPOSITIONS The present invention relates to a process for producing bitumen-polymer adhesive compositions and to the compositions obtainable by the process. In particular, the invention relates to a process for producing bitumen-polymer compositions containing styrene-diene block copolymers which compositions are suitable for use as pressure sensitive adhesives.
Bitumen-polymer compositions containing a low concentration of Styrene-diene block copolymers are known. However, in order to obtain a stable blend having stable elastomeric properties, the bitumen for use in such compositions must be selected from a relatively narrow range of suitable bitumens.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a process for producing bitumen-polymer compositions containing a low concentration of styrene-diene block copolymers which process can use a wide range of bitumens. The thermoplastic compositions produced according to the process of the present invention have
improved tack, cohesive strength, low temperature flexibility, and heat stability.
According to the present invention a process for producing a bituminous composition containing a styrene-diene block copolymer comprises blending together a bitumen, a styrene diene block co polyiner followed by a controlled amount oficross-linking agents oss-linking agents for the diene phaserand heating and mixing the blend until the diene phase is partially cross linked.
The bitumen is preferably a straight run bitumen having a penetration value as determined by the standard test method ASTM D5 of from 50 to 450 and more preferably from 100 to 250.
Styrene-diene block copolymers are known and any of these copolymers may be used in the process according to the present invention. The copolymers are block copolymers comprising styrene groups and conjugated diene groups. The conjugated diene groups may be, for example, butadiene or isoprene groups. Preferably the styrene-diene copolymer is a block copolymer comprising styrene groups and butadiene groups. The styrene-diene copolymer preferably has a mean modecular weight of 140,000.The amount of styrene-diene copolymer included in the composition according to the present invention is preferably from 2 to 20 and more preferably 5 to 15 parts by weight per 100 parts of the combined weight of the bitumen. it Curing agents for dienes are known and any of these may be used in the process according to the present invention. ror a a example, a curing system for use in the present invention may
zinc oxide stearic acid, and sulphur. Thetcuring system may also comprise suitable accelerators such as, for example, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide and Vanax OBTS 90. Compositions which are to be used as adhesives may also contain tackifying resins.
The process according to the present invention may be carried out using conventional inline blending equipment. The bitumen, and styrene-diene block copolymers are first blended together to form a homogeneous mixture. The diene phase is then dynamically 11 partially cross-linked by the addition of the curing agents and subsequently mixing the blend at a temperature above the activation temperature of the curing system.
The present invention includes the bitumen-polymer compositions obtainable by the process according to the present invention.
The compositions are particularly suitable for use as pressure sensitive adhesives.
Accordingly the present invention provides an adhesive composition suitable for use on self-adhesive waterproof membranes consisting of a sheet-like substrate and contiguous thereto a coating of pressure sensitive adhesive composition.
The adhesive composition is protected by a release film i.e.
siliconised paper.
The compositions remain tacky over a relatively wide temperature range e.g. from 00C-600C.
The compositions have an improved co-hesive strength, low temperature flexibility down to -200C and resistance to flow at 800C.
The compositions retain their thermoplastic characteristics.
The invention is illustrated with reference to the following example.
Example t 4000 kilograms of straight run bitumen having a penetration value of 200 were added to a reaction vessel fitted with a propeller stirrer and a high shear inline blender. The contents of the vessel were heated to 1600C-1800C. 40.4 kilograms of a tackifier, a tall oil residue sold under the trade name Unitol P by Union Corp. UK Ltd, were added. 351.3 kilograms of a radial styrene butadiene block copolymer sold under the trade name Finaprene 411 by Fina Chemicals Ltd were added to the reaction vessel and thoroughly dispersed at 1600C-1800C utilising both stirrer and blender.
After mixing the composition for 1-2 hours the curing system was added.
The curing system comprised 3.95 kilograme of sulphur, 3.95 kilogrames of stearic acid, 3.95 kilograms of zinc oxide, 0.395 kilograms of tetramethyl thiuram disulphide and 0.88 kilograms of Vanax OBTS 90 which is a mixture of 2 morpholinothio benzothiazole (90t) and di-benzothiazyl - 2 - disulphide sold by Vanderbilt Ltd, USA.
The temperature of the reactor was maintained at 1500C-1600C for 1 hr.
with continuous stirring of the mixture.
The bitumen polymer composition prepared according to the process of the present invention had a ring and ball softening point of 1090C, a penetration at 250C of 116, a viscosity at 1500C of 6.3 poise, a viscosity at 1750C of 3.5 poise, a viscosity at 2000C of 2.2 poise.
The composition exhibited good tack at OOC.
The composition exhibited nil slump at 80 C.
The composition exhibited flexibility down to -200C.
The composition exhibited release at 80 C from a standard silicone release paper generally used for bitumen-polymer laminate compositions.
A sample of the composition was maintained at a temperature of 1650C for 2 weeks. There was no substantial change in physical properties.
