Abstract

A portable fluorescent tube crusher comprises a containment tube angled to provide a stop 1, a rotatable ball crusher 5 and a sealable containment unit 2. In use a fluorescent tube to be crushed is held in the containment tube by stop 1 where it is crushed by the rotating ball crusher 5. The crushed tube falls under gravity into the container 2 which can be sealed by valve 3. A jet of water may be applied during crushing into the containment tube.

Description

This invention relates to crushing fluorescent tubes, enabling easy disposal.
There are known flourescent tube crushes which seperate the cadmuim and mercury from the glass and metal ends by washing with water which is allowed to drain away. The glass and metal ends are then collected in labelled socks which can be disposed of as hazardous waste. This method is relatively expensive. This invention does not need to seperate the components of flourescent tubes. Therefore enabling total containment of fluorescent tubes during and after crushing, they are then ready for waste management options of disposal.
According to the present invention this will provide a containment tube that is attached to the main assembly. which is angled to provide a stop, At this point a ball is rotated to crush the flourescent tube. were a set of water is then applied during crushing. Due to its vertical position the tube is gravity fed and therefore falls easily into a container, were upon completion a valve is closed sealing the unit.
FIGURE 1 Shows in perspective the fluorescent tube crusher fully assembled on a container.
FIGURE 2 Illustrated the seperation of crusher from container.
FIGURE 3 Shows exploded view of parts to be assembled.
Item (1):- the main body of the assembly is suitably secured to collecting container item (2).
Item (3):- provide a locking device to the container.
Item (4):- provides the housing for rotating ball.
Item (5):- is the rotating ball.
Item (6):- is a water spray device used during the crushing process from a low pressureised contaier.
Item (7):- is an isolation valve which seals the unit before and often crushing.
Item (8):- provides a sleeve to accept an appropriate length of tubing to allow for its total incapsulation.
Item (9):- is the containment tube for the flourescent tube sitting.

Claims (10)

CISIMS
1) A portable flourescent tube crusher with total containment of all parts of the tubes.
2) Reduces flourescent tubes to minimum size and stored safely in its own container.
3) Drastically reduces cost of alternative methods of containment and disposal.
4) The invention itself can be stored in a small area.
5) Easily maintained, as it is virtually maintenance free.
6) Once the container is full it can be capped ready for waste management options, the invention can them be placed on another suitable container ready for use.
7) Can accomodate all sizes of flourescent tubes for crushing.
8) The invention is in keeping with legal requirements on environmental friendly issues.
9) Due to the total contaiment, there are future options for the recycling of all components of flourescent tubes.
10) Simple to use.
