Abstract

A drive post prevents vehicles from being removed from their parked position, and retracts so that it can be lowered into its base support housing 1, to allow vehicles to pass over it unobstructed. The drive post 6, has a means of being securely locked in its vertical position with specific means of preventing either the lock 8 or locking peg 2 from being forcibly removed. The lock is fitted around the peg and locked. Since the peg and lock are within the post they are tamper proof.

Description

RETRACTABLE, LOCKING DRIVE POST This invention relates to a retractable, locking drive post.
Drive posts are veil known for being made from lengths of round tube, bar or hollow section steel which can be mounted in a vertical position behind or in front of a vehicle and secured to the floor in order to prevent the vehicle from being driven or taken avay from its parked position.
nost drive posts, hovever, have to be removed from their base fixings and stored elsewhere when not in use.
Also, vhen installed, some drive posts can be removed from their fixings either by cutting through the lock or by forcing apart the locking mechanisms or by removing the bolts vhich secure the post to the driveway. This effectively renders the drive post as being far from vandal proof.
According to the present invention there is provided a retractable, locking drive post comprising a base support housing which can be set into the drive and permanently secured by surrounding it with concrete, a retractable drive post, a means for securing the drive post to the base support housing which is releasable, a means of preventing the drive post from being forced from its base support housing, a cover lid to prevent the ingress of dirt and water which could affect the drive post's operational use.
A specific embodiment of the invention vill nov be described by vay of example with reference to the accompanying dravings in which: Figure 1 Shows the drive post in its retracted position set into concrete on a driveway.
Figure 2 Shows in perspective the drive post in its locked operational position.
Figure 3 Shows the operation of the base support locking mechanism with drive post omitted for clarity.
Figure 4 Shows the lock housing contained vithin the drive post.
Referring to Fig 2, Fig 3 and Fig 4 operation is as follovs: Access to the drive post 6 is achieved by lifting the cover lid 4 which swings backwards about hinge pin 5 and then swing the locking peg 2 upwards and backwards about locking peg pivot pin 3.
Grab the drive post 6 handle and lift upwards until the lock housing 7 within drive post 6 is adjacent to locking peg 2.
Swing locking peg 2 fully into the lock housing 7 and release grip on the drive post 6 handle when the locking peg 2 is located. insert the round lock 8 into the cutout in drive post 6 and fix securely around locking peg 2 using the key provided. Note the close tolerance which prevents the lock from being cut off.
To unlock and retract the drive post 6 into the base support housing 1, the steps described above are carried out in the reverse sequence.

Claims (5)

1. A retractable, locking drive post comprising a base support housing which can be set into a drive and permanently secured by surrounding it vith concrete.
2. A retractable, locking drive post as claimed in Claim 1 vherein means are provided to prevent forced removal of the lock from its housing by virtue of a close tolerance lock housing.
3. A retractable, locking drive post as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the base support housing has means of preventing the locking peg from being forcibly removed from its fixed hinge pin.
4. A retractable, locking drive post as claimed in Claim 1, Claim 2 or Claim 3 which is made from corrosion resistant materials.
5. A retractable, locking drive post substantially as described herein vith reference to Figures 1 - 4 of the accompanying drawings.
