Abstract

A speaker assembly comprises a speaker chassis 20 which is attached to a vehicle body panel 36 and houses the noise generating parts of the speaker. A cover member 22 comprises a sound permeable portion 42 extending over the front of the chassis, a solid rim 44 and integrally moulded clips 46 on the rim 44 for attaching the cover member directly to the chassis.

Description

A Speaker Assembly The present invention relates to speaker assemblies and is particularly useful for in in-car entertainment systems.
Generally, known speaker assemblies used in vehicles are of the form shown in Figure 1, comprising a speaker chassis 10, usually of metal construction, a fret 12 which is essentially cosmetic, providing a front cover for the speaker which is permeable to sound but which hides the speaker from view, and a bezel 14 which comprises a ring of moulded plastics which is bolted to the vehicle body and supports the chassis 10 and the fret 12.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a speaker assembly which is cheaper and simpler to assemble than those currently used.
Accordingly the present invention provides a speaker assembly comprising a speaker chassis housing noise generating means, and a cover member comprising a sound permeable portion extending over the front of the chassis and retaining means for attaching the cover member directly to the chassis.
The retaining means are preferably formed integrally with the cover portion.
Preferably the chassis includes mounting means, which are preferably formed integrally with it and may comprise studs, for attaching the assembly to the supporting means to which it is attached in use.
The supporting means may comprise a panel, and is preferably a vehicle body member.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings in which is a scrap section through part of a speaker assembly according to the invention.
The speaker assembly comprises a metal chassis 20 which houses the electrical and moving parts of the speaker and a cover member 22. The chassis has a radially extending annular flange 24 around the edge of its front face 26 with a plurality of studs 28 formed integrally therewith. The studs extend backwards from the flange 24 and each comprise a base portion 30 and a narrower threaded portion 32. The chassis is mounted in a circular aperture 34 in a vehicle body panel 36 which comprises part of a vehicle door. The aperture 34 is smaller in diameter than the flange 24 on the chassis. The panel 36 has a plurality of holes 38 through it arranged so as to receive the threaded portions 32 of the studs 28 which are secured to the panel 36 with nuts 40.
The cover member 22 is a circular one-piece moulding and comprises a circular sound permeable cover or fret portion 42 in its centre, surrounded by a solid annular rim 44. Projecting perpendicularly from the back of the rim 44 are a plurality of clips 46 which snap onto the outer edge of the flange 24 on the chassis 20 to support the cover member 22. The clips 46 are spaced inwards from the outer edge of the rim 44. The outer part of the rim 44 forms a bezel portion 48 The front faces of the cover portion 42 and the rim 44 including the bezel portion 48 form a substantially continuous surface. This results in the appearance of the assembly being better than that of known assemblies. Also because the assembly comprises only two parts it is simpler to assemble.
The cover portion of the cover member can be formed solely from the moulded plastics, or can include one or more layers of flexible material.

Claims (14)

1. A speaker assembly comprising a speaker chassis housing noise generating means, and a cover member comprising a sound permeable portion extending over the front of the chassis and retaining means for attaching the cover member directly to the chassis.
2. A speaker assembly according to claim 1 wherein the chassis includes mounting means for attaching the chassis to supporting means to which the speaker assembly is attached in use.
3. A speaker assembly according to claim 2 wherein the chassis includes a flange around its outer edge and the mounting means are attached to the flange.
4. A speaker assembly according to claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the mounting means comprises one or more studs.
5. A speaker assembly according to any foregoing claim wherein the cover member comprises a rim surrounding the cover portion, the retaining means being attached to the rim.
6. A speaker assembly according to any foregoing claim wherein the cover member is formed from moulded plastics.
7. A speaker assembly according to any foregoing claim wherein the retaining means comprises a plurality of clips.
8. A speaker assembly according to claim 2 or any claim dependent thereon wherein the retaining means engage with the flange to secure the cover member to the chassis.
9. A vehicle body member having a speaker assembly according to any foregoing claim mounted thereon.
lO.A vehicle body member according to claim 9 wherein the chassis is mounted directly onto the body member.
ll.A vehicle body member according to claim 9 or claim 10 having an aperture therethrough through which the chassis extends.
12.A vehicle body member according to any one of claims 9 to 11 having engaging means for engaging mounting means on the chassis.
13. A speaker assembly substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
14.A vehicle including a speaker assembly substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
