Abstract

A clock with a display unit which counts down to zero at twelve midnight on December 31st 1999. The display is in digital form and can display the time remaining to the end of the millennium in any combination of years, months, days, hours, minutes, seconds and fractions of seconds. There may be displayed messages at particular times.

Description

Clock The present invention relates to a clock or timing device, more particularly it relates to a clock or timing device set to count down to a defined fixed point in the future.
In this case the count down will be to zero at twelve midnight, December 31st 1999 and the advent of the year 2000. Normally, the length of time taken to a certain date is calculated by subtracting the present time from the date in question. Except for short periods this is time consuming and complex and gives no sense of anticipation.
I have devised a clock or timer which will give a sense of occasion and excitement.
According to the invention there is provided a clock with a visual display area in which there is displayed the time counting down to zero at 12.00 midnight on December 31st 1999.
Preferably the display area shows the time in digital form and can display time to elapse until the end of the millenium in years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds or any combination of one or more of these. For example, a particular novelty would be to have the time to elapse displayed in seconds so that the passing of time is displayed in a readily apparent form. If desired, fraction of seconds can be displayed. There can be a controlling means whereby different forms of displays can be converted one to the other so that the time can be displayed in one format from the choice of years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds, which can be switched to another format by the controlling means.
Optionally, special displays or views can be displayed when there are set times set, e.g. one year, one month, etc.
In existing timers the time to which the timer is set can be varied and requires complex mechanism or electronic controls.
In the device of our invention, a simpler mechanism is required which is made in such a way that the end time is fixed, thus simplifying manufacture. The mechanism used can be any existing or conventional clockwork, electric or electronic mechanism. The display area preferably displays the time to elapse in the form of illuminated numbers, using liquid crystals, light emitting diodes, etc.
The device can be of any desired size such as to fit in a pocket or larger.
The display area can be in the form of a screen on which is projected the view of the time to elapse. The device can be made readily detachable so that it can be mounted, e.g. on a car dashboard.
It is likely that there will be a contingent of the population who may believe the world will end at the end of the millenium and the device can be tailored for their needs, e.g. with appropriately worded messages which can flash up at particular times.
The device of the invention provides a convenient and entertaining way of counting the time to the end of the millenium which i easy to operate, convenient to install and inexpensive to manufacture.
