Abstract

A steering wheel cover has a generally circular cover sheet and a semi-circular back sheet to which the periphery of the back sheet is connected. This forms a pocket so that the cover can be placed over the top of the steering wheel. This keeps the steering wheel cool in hot weather. Fasteners A, B permit the lower part of the cover sheet to be folded onto the back sheet to form a semi circular pouch for articles.

Description

TI IF nOT HOOD The invention relates to steering wheel covers for vehicles.
It is a problem in hot weather that car steering wheels become too hot to grip. This problem has been sought to be overcome by the use of shields which cover the windscreen but these are bulky and difficult to erect and are considered by many to be unsightly.
According to the inventor there is a steering wheel cover provided comprising a cover sheet for covering a front face of a steering wheel, the cover sheet forming part of a pocket for receiving at least the upper portion of a steering wheel to hold the cover sheet on the steering wheel.
Preferably, the cover comprises a generally circular cover sheet and a semi-circular back sheet which the periphery of the back sheet being connected to the periphery of the cover sheet to form the pocket.
The portion of the cover sheet not connected to the back sheet may be foldable over the back sheet and be fastenable to the back sheet to form a case or pouch for storage.
The invention also includes a vehicle steering wheel in combination with a cover of this type.
The following is a more detailed description of an embodiment of the invention by way of examples, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1 thru 6 show various sections of the Hot Hood and also describes how it is put together.
The steering wheel cover comprises a cover sheet (Figure 1) which may be of leather, fabric or a plastics material or any other suitable material. The cover sheet (Figure 1) is generally circular or any other suitable shape corresponding to the shape of a steering wheel it is to cover.
A back sheet (Figure 3) is also provided which is semi-circular (or half the shape of the associated steering wheel). The curved edge of the back sheet (Figure 3) is connected to the edge of the cover sheet (Figure 1) by a strip of material (Figure 2) to form a pocket. This pocket is open and non-sealable so it can slide over the upper half of a vehicle steering wheel quickly and easily without the requirement of any extra fastening to hold it in place. The steering wheel cover shields the steering wheel, preventing the steering wheel from becoming too hot to grip.
When not in use, the cover can be folded and packed away. To facilitate this the portion of the cover sheet (Figure 1) not attached to the back sheet (Figure 2) may be provided with a fastening, such as the popper and stud shown in Figure 3 (A) and (B), to allow this portion to be folded over the back sheet (Figure 2) and connected to the back sheet to form a bag or pouch of semi circular shape. This pouch is fastened with a zip to Figure 3 and Figure 4 and contains a divided section shown in Figure 5 and a zipped smaller pocket shown in Figure 6 to allow it to be used for storage or carrying various personal items.
Whilst in use as a steering wheel cover, the contents of the pouch/pockets can remain filled as the zipped sections prevent the various stored articles from falling out of their various compartments.
The steering wheel cover may bear appropriate trade marks/logos and may be in colours that characterise the vehicles for which it is designed.

Claims (12)

1. A vehicle steering wheel in combination with a steering wheel cover comprising a cover sheet covering a front face of the steering wheel, the cover sheet forming part of a pocket receiving at least the upper portion of the steering wheel to hold the cover sheet on the steering wheel.
2. A steering wheel according to claim 1 wherein the cover comprises a generally circular cover sheet and a semi-circular back sheet with the arcuate portion of the periphery of the back sheet being connected to a portion of the periphery of the cover sheet to form the pocket.
3. A steering wheel according to claim 2 wherein the arcuate portion of the periphery of the back sheet is connected to an edge of a strip whose other edge is connected to said portion of the periphery of the cover sheet to form the pocket.
4. A steering wheel according to any one of claim 1 to 3 wherein the cover sheet has a portion not connected to the back sheet and wherein said portion is foldable over the back sheet to form a case or pouch for storage.
5. A steering wheel according to claim 4 wherein the cover sheet is connected to the back sheet by a releasable fastening.
6. A steering wheel according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the interior of the pocket is provided with at least one flap or pouch.
7. A steering wheel according to any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the cover sheet carries a badge or logo.
8. A steering wheel according to any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the steering wheel cover is formed from a plastics material.
9. A steering wheel according to any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the steering wheel cover is formed from leather.
10. A steering wheel substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
11. A cover for a steering wheel comprising a cover sheet shaped to cover a front face of a steering wheel, the cover sheet forming part of a pocket so arranged as to receive at least an upper portion of the steering wheel to hold the cover sheet on the steering wheel.
12. A cover for a steering wheel substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
