The at least one heating element (40) is a planar electric heating element located substantially parallel to the first orifice (25). The air vent (5) may further comprise a second orifice (30) and be positioned in the ceiling or in the upper region of a wall of a caravan, mobile home or the like. The element may be located between the first and second orifices. A duct (35) connects the first and second orifices.

Description

Improved Air Vent This invention relates to an air vent, and in particular, though not exclusively, to an air vent for use in caravans, mobile homes or the like.
Ventilation in mobile homes and caravans - levels of which are governed by British Standard - has for many years been a problem for manufacturers and users alike.
Most existing ventilation systems result in unwanted draughts and contribute to heat loss however well the caravan/mobile home is constructed.
These problems have been partially addressed in UK Patent Publication No. 2 278 429 which discloses a floor or wall mounted heater vent for caravans intended to prevent draughts and the loss of heat from within the caravan.
GB 2 278 429 does not however deal with the problem with the ventilation of the upper regions of a caravan.
Further the vent of GB 2 278 429 extends either into or out of the caravan.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate at least some of the aforementioned disadvantages.
Accordingly a first aspect of the present invention provides an air vent comprising a first orifice and at least one heating element, wherein the at least one heating element is a planar electric heating element located substantially parallel to the first orifice.
In this way, air passing through the first orifice from outside to inside is heated by the at least one heating element.
The at least one heating element is preferably of the flexible, impregnated type or, alternatively, of the etched or screen printed type.
Preferably the air vent extends through a structural planar member such as a wall, floor or advantageously a ceiling of a caravan, mobile home or the like.
Preferably the first orifice is substantially flush with an inner surface of the structural planar member.
Preferably the vent further provides a second orifice and duct work connecting the first and second orifices.
Preferably the second orifice is substantially flush with an outer surface of the structural planar member.
The air vent may aid in the elimination of draughts by heating air passing into the caravan, mobile home or the like from the surrounding atmosphere.
In addition the air vent may aid in the ventilation of the caravan by providing a route for stale air to pass from the interior to the exterior of the caravan, mobile home or the like.
The air vent may be positioned in the ceiling or in the upper region of a wall of a caravan, mobile home or the like.
The at least one planar electric heating element may be retained in a recess provided on an inner surface of the structural planar member such that the air vent is flush therewith.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided an air vent mountable through a structural planar member comprising a first orifice and a second orifice, the orifices being substantially flush with an inner surface and an outer surface of the structural member respectively, wherein duct work connects the first and second orifices, and wherein at least one electric heating element is provided between the first and second orifices.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a caravan, mobile home or the like having a vent according to the first aspect or the second aspect.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings which are: Figure 1 a cross sectional view of an air vent in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention; and Figure 2 a partially cut-away perspective view of a heating element for use in the air vent of Fig 1.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 there is shown an embodiment of an air vent 5 according to the present invention provided in a ceiling 10 of a caravan, the ceiling 10 having an interior surface 15 and an exterior surface 20.
The air vent 5 comprises a first interior orifice 25, a second exterior orifice 30, a duct 35 between the interior and exterior orifices 25, 30 and heating means 40 provided adjacent to the interior orifice 25. The heating means 40 comprise at least one planar heating element 44 and a sheet of insulation 45 provided within a protective casing 50.
The heating means 40 is attached to a carrier plate 55 which is recessed into the interior surface 15 of the ceiling 10 such that an innermost face 60 of the protective casing 50 lies substantially flush with the interior ceiling surface 15. The carrier plate 55 has an orifice 85 formed substantially centrally thereon. An end of the duct 35 is connected to the orifice 85.
The carrier plate 55 is provided with a peripheral lip 70. Fixing means (not shown) may be employed to retain the lip 70 in association with the interior surface 15.
Likewise the casing 50 is provided with a lip 75.
Further fixing means (not shown) may be employed through the lip 75 to retain the carrier plate 55 and the casing 50 together.
The casing 50 provides a plurality (in this embodiment four) of spacer means 80 in the form of indentations formed in the casing 50. The spacer means 80 space the casing from the carrier plate 55 so as to provide a ventilation path from the first to second orifices 25,30.
The exterior orifice 30 is surmounted by a cowl 65 and perforated screen (not shown) to prevent the ingress of rain, snow and other such undesirable airborne matter.
The at least one heating element 45 may be of the flexible impregnated type (such as "Flexel" (TM), available from the present applicants) which comprise sheets of woven, carbon impregnated glass fibre material having copper foil busbars stitched to opposite edges thereof for connection to an electrical power supply (not shown). Such elements may be made in almost any required size and may be manufactured in a wide range of resistances, power ratings and operating temperatures.
Alternatively, etched or screen-printed elements could be used or, less desirably, laminated, planar, wire wound elements.
In use, the air vent 5 benefits the occupants of the caravan in a number of ways. When the at least one heating element 45 is not being supplied with electrical power, the vent 5 acts as a conventional air vent. When electrical power is supplied the at least one heating element 45 increases in temperature. Air passing through the exterior orifice 30 and duct 35 from outside the caravan is heated above the external ambient temperature before being delivered to the interior of the caravan.
The heating means 40 may also radiate heat energy to the interior of the caravan. Furthermore the vent 5 allows stale air, for example as a by-product of cooking, to be removed from within the caravan.
The embodiment of the invention described hereinbefore is given by way of example only and is not meant to limit the scope of the invention in any way. It should be particularly noted that an air vent in accordance with the present invention may be provided within the upper portion of a wall of a caravan. It should be further understood that the term caravan is used for the sake of the simplicity and that the present invention is equally suitable for use in mobile homes, portacabins and similar prefabricated structures.
