Abstract
A transit and display pack has a display tray 1 with removable display area 6 and a transit hood 2 to properly protect the tray and its contents during transit. The hood is locked in position over the tray by the alignment of lugs 3 and locking slits 4, and the tray lugs are then folded and releasably secured directly or indirectly to the hood flaps 8 for security in transit. Opening devices 5 or 10 are provided in the hood to help release the securing means, allowing the hood to be lifted off the tray. The tray is now free to be placed at the point of sale eg a supermarket shelf, and the removable display section pulled free.
Description
TRANSIT AND DISPLAY PACK
This invention relates to a combined transit and display pack.
Transit packs are packs which contain and protect their contents whilst they are being transported. Display trays are designed to display their contents at the point of sale. A transit and display pack combines all these characteristics. Frequently the transit pack is converted to display by tearing along perforations or pulling specially incorporated tear tape devices, or by the use of knives to open the pack. This is time consuming and may lead to unsightly damaged to the pack or its contents.
According to a first aspect of the present invention a transit and display pack comprises a display tray and a hood, the hood being arranged to extend over the tray, the tray and the hood including portions arranged to cooperate to at least partially assist in preventing inadvertent removal of the hood from the tray.
The hood and the tray may be arranged to cooperate with each other to restrict relative lateral movement.
The hood or tray may include a first foldable portion arranged to be moved to cooperate with the other of the hood or the tray to prevent inadvertent removal of the hood from the tray. The first foldable portion may be arranged to be restricted in its relative movement, when the pack is assembled, by abutment with a portion of the other part of the hood or the tray. The other part of the hood or tray may be a second foldable portion which, when folded, restricts the movement of the first foldable portion. The first foldable portion may extend through a restricted opening in the other of the hood or tray, and the restricted opening may comprise a slot.
The first foldable portion may comprise a lug. The first foldable portion may be provided on the tray.
Outwards movement of the first foldable portion relative to the side of the pack may be resisted by abutment with a part of the hood and the part of the hood that resists outward movement of the first foldable portion may be movable to a position in which such outward movement of the first foldable portion is permitted to allow the foldable portion to move outwardly to allow removal of the hood. The part of the hood that resists outward movement of the first foldable portion may be movable by movement outwardly of the pack. The outward movement may be achieved by at least partial detachment of that part from the hood.
The first foldable portion may be provided on a part of the tray that is subsequently removable from the tray, after the hood has been removed.
Two foldable portions may be included.
The hood may be arranged to cover the top and side walls of the pack.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a transit and display pack comprising a base display tray, with lug extensions and removable display area, a separate external hood with slit locking recesses, means for securing the hood to the tray, the tray and hood being so constructed to lock together when superimposed and the hood flaps are closed and sealed.
There are also provided opening devices in the hood.
The present invention includes any combination of the herein referred to features or limitations.
Specific embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective, the erected tray with lug extensions upright;
Figure 2 shows in perspective, the hood with inner flaps folded in;
Figure 3 shows the hood positioned over the tray with lug extensions upright;
Figure 4 shows the tray lug extensions folded into the slit locking recesses of the hood;
Figure 5 shows the complete transit pack with the hood flaps folded and secured to the tray lugs;
Figure 6 shows the transit pack converted to a display tray with the removable display area removed;
Figure 7 shows in perspective a second embodiment of the erected tray with lug extensions upright;
Figure 8 shows in perspective, the hood with inner flaps folded in;;
Figure 9 shows the hood positioned over the tray with the lug extensions upright;
Figure 10 shows the tray lug extensions folded into the slit locking recesses of the hood;
Figure 11 shows the complete transit pack with the hood flaps sealed on to the tray lugs; and
Figure 12 shows the transit pack converted to a display tray with the removable display area removed.
Referring to the drawing the pack comprises a base display tray 1, and a separate external hood 2, releasably secured together by, for example, adhesive, tape, or similar means (not shown) extending across the flaps 8.
In order to fasten the hood to the tray the hood is lowered in position over the tray with the lug extensions 3 of the tray protruding through the slit locking recesses 4 in the inner flaps 7 of the hood, as shown in Figure 3.
The slit is formed at an elevation slightly higher than the fold line for the inner flap 7 such that, when the inner flap 7 is bent over, an opening appears in line with the inner edge of the hood. The lug extensions are now folded down on to the hood slit locking recesses in the inner flaps 7, as illustrated in Figure 4. The means of securing the hood to the tray is applied as the outer flaps 8 of the hood are closed and sealed. Those securing means comprise a strip of adhesive tape that goes over the join between the two flaps 8, as seen in Figure 5, and part of the way down the opening devices 5. The pack is now ready for transit. Vertical movement of the hood relative to the tray is resisted by entrapment of the lug extensions 3 of the tray between the inner flaps 7 and the outer flaps 8 of the hood.
To convert the transit pack to a display tray the means securing the hood to the tray is released by pulling outwards on one of the opening devices 5 of the hood.
That pulling movement detaches the device 5 from the hood by breaking the spaced points of connection. The opening device 5 is then pulled across the top of the hood taking with it the tape and, ultimately, the tape and the device 5 are completely detached from the pack. The hood is then lifted by raising and pulling on the flaps 8. This causes the inner flaps 7 of the hood to push the lug extensions upwardly as the hood is slid upwardly off the tray.
The embodiment shown in Figures 7 to 12 is similar in construction and operation to the embodiment previously described and like parts have been given the same reference numerals.
The tray shown in Figure 7 includes a weakened line 9 created by a series of perforations along the lower side of an end wall 6 and upwardly along each side wall to the top thereof. After the hood has been removed the part above the weakened line is torn off to improve the visibility of the displayed products, as shown in Figure 12.
As can be seen from Figures 8 and 10, the slit locking recesses 4 in the inner flaps 7 of the hood are of a greater length than those previously described. This allows the lug extensions 3 of the tray to lie substantially flush, or just proud of the flaps 7. In order to connect the hood to the tray glue is applied to the upwardly facing surfaces of the lug extensions 3 of
Figure 10 before the flaps 8 of the hood are folded down and stuck thereto.
In order to remove the hood fingers push the hinged opening devices 10 downwardly about a fold 11 to enable the flaps 8 to be pulled upwardly thereby breaking the bond. The hood is then lifted off as described previously.
