Abstract

A device for cutting sheet material has a body (1.) and, along its length a continuous slot (2.) formed to allow a blade to easily slide completely through the slot for the purpose of accurately and safely cutting a sheet material laid over it to fit perfectly up to a surface at 90 degrees from the surface to which the material is to be laid or fitted. A spike or spikes (3.) are provided on the main body to secure the material and prevent movement during the cutting procedure. An inner sleeve (4.) is provided and can be fitted to the main body (1.) to facilitate the attachment of one main body to the next enabling the device to be increased in length to coincide with the length of the cut required. The device may be used in trimming carpets.

Description

MATERIAL EDGE FORM This invention, known as a Material Edge Form, is a device to aid, assist and simplify the cutting of a material, for example carpet, to fit accurately against a wall or other vertical surf ace/ndary.
me normal system of marking out and cutting a material, such as carpet, is to lay it on a flat surface, such as the floor, and abut to a vertical coming away from a flat surface, with surplus overhang of the material and, using an implement to crease or fold the subject material into the corner, where the flat surface finishes and the vertical surface comences. Once this has been achieved, it is then normal practice to use a blade to cut down the fold or crease created against a straight edge or 'freehand'.
Thins produces an approximate fit with the potential hazard of damage to surfaces below the blade if great caution is not exercised.
According to the present invention, there is provided a Material Edge Form comprising of a main body triangular or rhomboid in cross section with a slot running down its length.
Such body or bodies are intended to be attached one to the next by an inner sleeve to cover full length of 'cut required.
This sleeve is attached to the main body, like a male-female attachment and incorporates the slot located to match that of the main body.
To ensure that the material stays in position whilst being cut, multiples of steel spikes are attached to the main body to penetrate the materials and hold securely. The spike frequency will be sufficient to ensure security of the material position.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig 1: shews, in perspective, an example of two Material Edge Forms slotted together abutting a skirting board at the bottom of a wall.
Fig 2: shows, in perspective, the main body describing at a. the base, to be placed on the flat surface, in this example, the floor b. the location of the slot, which receives the blade, being equal in length to the measurement of a. the base, from that corner of the base to the point at which the slot is located.
c. being the vertical aspect of the invention, to be pressed 'flush' against the vertical surface, r , in this example being the skirting board Fig 3:- is an end view or cross section of the device illustrating example of function which, in this case, is the cutting of carpet to fit 'flush' with a skirting board

Claims (2)

  1. CL 1. A Material Edge Form comprising of a slotted main body and inner sleeve in the form of a triangle or rhomboid, provided in various lengths. These lengths can be used separately or joined together to make simple the accurate and safe cutting of a material to abut perfectly to another surface at 90 degrees from the surface to be covered by the material required.
  2. 2. A Material Edge Form in claim 1, wherein a spike or spikes are provided to secure the material by penetration, thus avoiding material movEment during the cutting procedure.
