Abstract
The aerial survey/remote sensing door pod is a modified aircraft door which can be readily interchanged with the existing door. The modification of the door consists of an aerodynamically shaped pod with portholes A & B, provided so as to give a suitable downward view for remote sensing devices (Photographic cameras, Television cameras, Digital cameras, Scanners, Spectrometers, Aeromagnetic equipment, Laser profilers, Radar devices). The interior of the pod has a support/mounting plate C for the attachment of aerial survey/remote sensing devices. The port holes are fitted with removable optical glass plates. The interior of the pod is accessible from inside the aircraft.
Description
AERIAL SURVEY/REMOTE SENSING DOOR POD.
1/ This invention relates to a modified aircraft door to which
has been fitted an aerodynamically shaped pod.
The bottom of the pod has port holes through which can be
operated a variety of aerial survey/remote sensing devices:
(Photographic cameras, Digital cameras, Television cameras,
Scanners, Spectrometers, Aeromagnetic equipment, Laser
profilers, Radar devices). Removable optical glass plates are
fitted to the port holes 2/ Conventionally aerial survey/remote sensing is undertaken
using a specially modified aircraft. The port holes are cut in
the floor of the fuselage and the aircraft is thus dedicated
for this type of work. The operator is also restricted to one
particular aircraft.
3/ The present invention consists of the modified aircraft door
which can be fitted in place of the existing door by removing
the hinge bolts, removing the existing door, installing the
modified door and replacing the four bolts. At the end of a
survey flight the original door can be re-fitted.
4/ The unique advantages of of this invention are:
A/ Modification of an aircraft is not required.
B/ Any aircraft of the appropriate type may be used, thus
giving the operator a wide choice of aircraft.
5/ a specific embodiment of the invention follows:
The present invention by way of example only can be applied to
the door of a Cessna 152 aircraft. The design could be adapted
to fit on other high wing types of aircraft with a suitable
downward view below the door.
6/ Referring to the photographs:
Figure 1 shows an exterior view of the complete door pod
Figures 2 and 3 show an exterior view of the door pod
fitted to a Cessna 152 aircraft. The hinge bolts referred
to in paragraph 3/ are numbered 1,2,3,4 in Figure 2.
Figures 4 and 5 show an interior view of the door pod
fitted to a Cessna 152 aircraft. The port holes referred
to in paragraph 1/ are annotated A and B. A mounting
plate for attaching required aerial survey/remote sensing
devices is annotated C.
It will be seen that the interior of the door pod is
easily accessible from the co-pilots position in the
aircraft.
Claims (1)
1/
An Aerial survey/Remote sensing door pod comprising an
aircraft door to which has been added an aerodynamically
shaped pod structure figs 1 2 & 3, with port holes A B,
through which may be operated aerial survey and remote sensing
devices: (photographic cameras, Television cameras, Digital
cameras, Scanners, Spectrometers, Aeromagnetic equipment,
laser profilers, radar devices). The pod is easily accessible
from the aircraft interior. The port holes have removable
optical glass plates. The interior of the pod has a mounting
plate C for the attachment of aerial survey/remote sensing
devices.
2/ The above modification is designed, constructed, and flight
tested by approved organisations and individuals so as to
meet with the full approval of the British Civil Aviation
Authority.
