Abstract
A portable hand held mortice machine has a powered driving body (A), a variety of releasably mounted mortice bits (B) which lock into place when mounted, and are to be used for the purpose of forming mortice holes. Where practical, a releasably mounted adjustable guide (not shown) may be used. The mortice machine when in operation is used in similar fashion to a power drill to form square edged holes or slots which will aid in the installation of a variety of joinery components and the like.
Description
Hand held portable mortice machine
This invention relates to a hand held portable mortice machine.
Morticing machines are already being used to form mortice holes in a variety of materials to form mortice and tenon joints which are used widely in the joinery manufacturing industry. These machines are not portable and are of a large floor standing nature. The hand held portable mortice machine will be for the purpose of cutting square holes in timber and other materials where practical. It will come with an assortment of different size mortice bits, These will be used to suit varying widths and depths of mortice holes which are encountered when installing .mortice locks, and aid with the installation of hinge houseings, letter box holes, etc.Useing this tool will greatly increase the speed and ease of installation of the previously mentioned items.Prior to this the system employed to form mortice holes in an on site situation was time consuming and of a intricate nature.
According to the present invention there is provided a hand held portable mortice machine for the purpose of cutting square edged holes (mortices) in timber or where appropriate and practical other materials, Similar to a hand held electric power drill ,using a variety of releasably mounted mortice bits of different width and depth which lock into position when mounted. These will be used to help with the installation of mortice locks, hinge housings, letter box openings, etc. in an on site situation.
The specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the device in elevation
Figure 2 shows the device with bits dismounted
Figure 3 shows the device in operation.
With reference to the drawings the hand held portable mortice machine fig.1. will be electrically powered and have a driving body similar to that of a hand held power drill figure 2 (A).Releasably mounted to this driving body using a suitable method, for example a damp with locking nut ,or twist lock system or similar (not shown) there will be a choice of assorted mortice bits figure 2 (B).which comprise of a rotating auger fig 2(C) confined with in a square tunnel with chisel leading edges as shown in figure 2 (B,C)These bits will be chosen to suit the size of mortice lock to be installed and then mounted and lock into position to the driving body fig 2(A) as described herein. The mortice machine as fig.1 will then be presented up to the face of the work ie.a door edge,as in fig 3(D) as the mortice machine is operated and pushed forward (similar in use to a power drill) figure 3,the mortice bit (B) forms the square hole ready to receive the mortice lock or similar. This process is repeated until a mortice hole of required length and depth is obtained.
In this description there is no guide on the mortice machine to keep it in a straight line when in operation but there could be provision made to releasably mount an adjustable guide(not shown) to the body (A) of the mortice. machine.
Claims (5)
1.A mortice machine comprising a driving body, a number of mortice bits of various size ,a means of releasably mounting the mortice bits to the driving body,a means of locking the mortice bits into place when mounted and a means of releasably mounting an adjustable guide to the mortice machine to help keep the mortice machine in a straight line when in operation.
2.A mortice machine as claimed in claim 1 wherein means are provided to releasably mount mortice bits.
3.A mortice machine as claimed in claim 1 or daim 2 wherein means is provided to lock into position mortice bit.
4.A mortice machine as claimed in any preceding claim wherein means is provided to drive auger cutter.
5.A mortice machine as in claimed in any preceding claim where means are provided to releasably mount a adjustable guide, to keep the mortice machine in a straight line as required
