Abstract

A door 10 having a glazed panel 12, is formed by cutting out openings in a uniform door blank and glazing the openings. The blank can be a laminate with wood, steel or plastic layers; glass panels can be held in the openings by beadings.

Description

Glazed Door Field of the invention The present invention relates to a door having a glazed panel and to its method of manufacture.
Background of the invention Doors having glazed panels, for example doors of a portcullis design, are normally assembled from lengths of wood that are joined to one another by mortise and tennon joints. Such doors are normally expensive to manufacture because their assembly is skilled and labour intensive.
ObJect of the invention The present invention seeks to provide a glazed door that is less costly to manufacture.
Summary of the invention According to the present invention, there is provided a method of making a door having a glazed panel, which comprises the steps of providing a one-piece door blank that is uniform over its entire area, cutting out the blank to form at least one opening, and glazing each opening.
The blank may be of any board that does not warp readily, such as block board or compressed fibre board, but it is preferred that the blank should comprise a sheet of plywood or other laminated board.
For improved security, it is possible to use a laminated board including at least one metal layer but the door may alternatively be strengthened by mounting metal bars in holes drilled into the door.
The invention also provides a door having a glazed panel that is manufactured by the above method.
Brief description of the drawings The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which : Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door of the invention, and Figure 2 is a section along the line II-II in Figure 1.
Detailed description of the preferred embodiment Figure 1 shows a door 10 of portcullis design having nine openings 12 fitted with glass panes. The section along the line II-II shown in Figure 2 illustrates the manner in which the door 10 is constructed.
The door is formed from a one-piece blank instead of being made from jointed lengths of wood. It is preferred not to use as a door blank a single wooden board, as this will have a tendency to warp. Instead one may use a board that is not prone to warping such as a compressed fibre board, block board, plywood or a laminated board.
The blank used in the illustrated preferred embodiment is a laminated board made up of layers of wood 14 and metal 16.
Preferably, the metal sheets are made of steel having a thickness of at least 3 mm. The drawing shows four layers of wood and three of metal but this need not be the case as a greater or lesser number of layers may be used. It is also not essential that the wood and metal layers should alternate with one another.
Furthermore, it is not essential to use wood, as a decorative plastics or resin material may be used for the outer layers.
To form the openings 12, cut-outs are formed in the blank by sawing (using a jig-saw), routing or milling. The openings 12 are glazed by retaining panes of glass 20 within them by means of beading 22. The beading may be formed as a preshaped moulding or it may consist of strips that are pinned or glued to the opening 12 in the door 10.
The metal sheets embedded within the door will be visible along the edges, as seen at the top of the closure panel in Figure 1. If this is not desired, then an edging strip 18 may be placed over the edges, as shown for the longer sides in Figure 1 and in the section of Figure 2.
Though the invention has been described by reference to a door made from a wood and metal laminate, it is alternatively possible to form the door from a blank that does not contain any metal. If desired, such a door may be reinforced by inserting metal bars into drilled bores running between the glazed panels.
Because the shape of the cut-outs may be varied at will, it is possible for example to form a door with glazed panels in the shape of a fan-light. Thus the invention allows great latitude in the design of the door while considerably reducing its manufacturing cost.

Claims (10)

1. A method of making a door having a glazed panel, which comprises the steps of providing a one-piece door blank that is uniform over its entire area, cutting out the blank to form at least one opening, and glazing each opening.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the door blank is a laminated board including at least one metal layer.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein each opening is formed by sawing, routing or milling a cut-out in the door blank.
4. A door having at least one glazed panel, wherein the door is made by cutting out at least one opening in a onepiece door blank that is uniform over its entire area, and glazing each opening.
5. A door as claimed in claim 4, wherein the door blank comprises a laminated board.
6. A door as claimed in claim 5, wherein the laminated board includes at least one metal layer.
7. A door as claimed in any of claims 4, 5 and 6, wherein an edging strip over is placed over at least one edge of the door.
8. A door as claimed in claim 4 or 5, wherein the door is reinforced by means of metal bars embedded in the door blank between the glazed panels.
9. A door as claimed in any of claim 4 to 8, wherein the door is of portcullis design,
10. A door having a glazed opening and constructed substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
