Abstract

A manually controllable regulator is provided for controlling the voltage of boosted signals provided on a screened cable 12 for a television receiver (not shown). The regulator is positioned adjacent the television receiver enabling the television user to fine-tune the boosted signals while viewing the screen of the television. This facilitates the user making adjustment both when the television aerial is first installed and at any other time, as may be required, when the strength of the received signals vary even temporarily.

Description

TELEVISION SIGNALS The invention relates to television signals.
The invention relates more particularly to adjusting incoming television transmission signals for use by a domestic television receiver.
It is known to amplify television signals by mounting a booster or signal amplifier adjacent an aerial which amplifies the incoming signals for transmission via a screened cable to a television receiver. The cable will normally terminate at an outlet socket mounted in a room of a house into which a television aerial cable is plugged.
The booster is normally provided with a manual adjustment so that the gain provided can be adjusted and controlled especially when the aerial is first installed or mounted on top of a building. This means that tuning or at least fine-tuning of the strength of the signal provided for the television receiver is difficult and is practically impossible once the installation is completed to accommodate for temporary incoming signal strength variations or as a result of other users being added to receive signals from the same screened cable.
It is an object of the invention to overcome or at least reduce this problem.
According to the invention there is provided a manually controllable regulator for regulating a booster which provides boosted incoming television signals on a screened cable from a television aerial, in which the regulator is arranged to be fitted adjacent a television receiver in the path of the boosted signal and to regulate the signals for reception by the television receiver.
The regulator is preferably arranged to control or adjust the voltage of the boosted signals.
The regulator may include an oscillator which responds to oscillate with the boosted signals and an adjustable voltage controller which is manually controllable to control the voltage of the boosted signals supplied to the television receiver.
The voltage controller may be supplied with power via a full-wave rectifier and transformer from a mains voltage supply.
A regulator according to the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying schematic circuit diagram.
Referring to the drawings, an aerial 10 for receiving television transmission signals is provided with an adjacently mounted signal booster 11 that amplifies incoming signals and supplies boosted signals to a screened cable 12. The other end of the cable 12 is connected to a television receiver (not shown) via a capacitor 13. The regulator comprises an oscillator circuit including the capacitor 13 and an inductor 14 which is supplied by a voltage which is manually controllable by a variable resistor 15. A voltage is supplied to the resistor 15 via a full-wave rectifier 16 and transformer 17 from an alternating current mains supply.
In use, the effective resistance of the resistor 15 is manually adjusted to fine-tune boosted signals supplied to the television receiver. As the regulator can be provided in a small control box and positioned adjacent the television receiver, the television user can manually adjust the resistor 15 and watch a picture on the television screen until a good picture is formed. In other words, it is no longer necessary to arrange for adjustments to be made, which are in any event usually quite or relatively inherently crude, to the amplification of the booster circuit 11. As explained earlier, the aerial 10 and the booster 11 are normally positioned far removed from the television receiver itself so that co-ordinating adjustments to the booster to produce at a sharp or clear picture is difficult. It will not least. normally require climbing up to the outside aerial which is impractical for a television user. Thus. regulators according to the present invention supply power via the screened cable to drive the booster and not only enable fine-tuning but allow the users to readily make any minor adjustments from time to time, as and when required, due to changes in incoming signal strength at the aerial or other changes of quality of reception of the boosted signals.
