Description

Cast iron piston ring 2302930 This invention relates to a cast iron piston
ring with depressions formed in the running surface.
Piston rings which serve to seal the combustion chambers of internal combustion engines have to have high strength or resistance to abrasion, so that they do not wear out prematurely. In addition, such piston rings are subjected to high thermal stresses. It is already known to form depressions in the running surfaces in the case of cast iron piston rings. Lubricant is held in these depressions.
DE OS 1 904 734 discloses a piston ring in which the depressions are formed by etching out graphite lamellae. It is also known to apply chromium layers with a finely distributed network of cracks as a sliding surface on the running surface.
The chromium layer has a high hardness and can thus prolong the life of the piston ring. The disadvantage of such constructions lies firstly in that the depressions are not suitable as long-term lubricant reservoirs and secondly the application of wear resistant materials has a bad effect in the production process, since their use leads to effects which are in part damaging to the environment.
The invention is based on the object of improving a piston ring of the kind referred to in relation to the manufacture thereof, while seeking for optimum operating conditions at the same time.
This object is met according to the invention in that the depressions are made by cold-forming the cast iron material, so that individual, non-uniform plateau areas are formed on the running surface. Compaction of the material takes place through the cold-forming, with the result that the hardness increases in this region. Because of this it is no longer necessary to apply wear-resistant coatings to the running surface. Moreover, an irregular labyrinth results between the plateaus and contributes to the improvement of the lubrication conditions. The oil clinging in the depressions runs round the plateaus and thus contributes to cooling. The depressions are preferably formed by impressing ball-shaped particles. Depending on the application, a specific roughness may be required. In Otto engines the roughness should be smaller than in Diesel engines. In particular the roughness should lie in a range between 3 and 15 jum.
0 The invention is explained below in more detail with reference to an embodiment shown in the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of a piston ring according to the invention, Figure 2 is an enlarged portion according to the view II in Figure 1, Figure 3 is a cross-section of Figure 2.
A split piston ring for internal combustion engines is shown in Figure 1 in perspective view. The piston ring consists of cast iron. The plateau surfaces 3 (Figures 2, 3) formed on the running surface by cold-working make it possible to dispense with additional wear-resistant layers on the running surface, which are costly to make. The plateaus 3 result from compaction of the cast iron material on the running surface 2, in that ball-shaped particles are pressed into the running surface 2, so that they create depressions 4. When the particles are pressed in, an irregular labyrinth results, with non-uniform plateau surfaces 3, which can build up an oil film, which protects the running surface 2 from undesirable high wear by cooling and lubrication.
