Abstract
The garment comprises two layers of material internally strengthened by welding the layers together so as to form pockets 1 therebetween, which, as described, may be inflated to provide a semi-rigid body support. Inflation may be by means of a compressed air cartridge 4, triggered by string 3, which may vary in length and elasticity as appropriate, e.g. a short length for motorcycle riders, or a longer, more elastic length for horse-riders. The vest may also have an expanding neck collar 2.
Description
MOTORCYCLE CRASH AIR VEST (HORSE-RIDERS' CRASH AIR VEST)
Participants in motorcycling and horse-riding have virtually no protection in their clothing in the event of an accident.
It is envisaged that the proposed air vest will protect both the spine and the vital organs only as broken limbs may be repaired and it is generally not life-threatening when these are injured. The air vest will be designed to fit over any existing layer of clothing and be of a light but tough plastic or fabric. The vest has inflatable sectors,,, and an expanding neck collar(2) which, when inflation is triggered, provide a cushioned but rigid support to help prevent injury (See diagram). While it is realized that this is not a foolproof system, it does represent a significant safety aid in both activities.
In the case of the motorcyclist inflation is triggered when he/she leaves the seat. This is by means of a trigger string(3) attached to the seat which when activated, itself activates a small compressed air cartridge.(4) It is envisaged that these cartridges are replaceable and this is another revenue opportunity. (ATUACHtENT BRACT OF CORRFCT TE PF WILL BE SLIPPLIED(S).
Horse-riding requires the rider to rise from the saddle. Therefore in this case the trigger string which attaches to the saddle will be of an elastic nature which only triggers when a specific range of movement (2 feet is envisaged) causes activation.
The air vest offers no restriction and yet when activated provided protection to the unseated rider's whole spine and vital organs. Full mobility is still possible when in a deflated mode.
Claims (6)
1. The Body Protective Over-vest comprises of two welded layers
of material internally strengthened by cross-ties.
2. The Body Protective Over-vest as claimed in Claim l,contains
strategically placed sections for inflation in vulnerable
body areas.
3. The Body Protective Over-vest as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim
2, is activated by means of a compressed air cartridge via a
trigger string.
4. The Body Protective Over-vest as claimed in Claim 3, may
have variations in the length and the elasticity of the
trigger string according to type of use.
5. The Body Protective Over-vest as claimed in Claim 3 or Claim
4 provides fixings for the trigger string, again dependent
on use and point of attachment.
6. The Body Protective Over-vest substantially as described
herein with reference to Figure 1 of the accompanying
drawing.
