Abstract
A virtual reality, computer simulated store which allows audio-visual media to be examined, handled and played within a three dimensional space from a remote location. The consumer may make a sampling decision based on size, scale and texture as well as two dimensional text and visual data.
Description
VIRTUAL REALITY RECORD STORE
This invention relates to a virtual reality audio-visual media store.
Audio-visual media, for example, compact discs and videos, are available for sale both in the real world via conventional retail outlets and via virtual methods.
Virtual methods, for example, include mail-order catalogues. A virtual representation of the product is used to enable the consumer to make his/her purchasing decision. This virtual representation can be text, picture or sound, or a combination of these qualities.
Virtual methods of representing audio-visual media are however two dimensional. The concept of a product existing in space is ignored. Therefore, the size, scale and texture of a virtually represented product can only be estimated or calculated, by a consumer, with the use of additional information.
In the case of audio-visual media, texture can be, for example, sound or video footage.
According to the present invention there is provided a virtual reality, computer simulated method of representing audio-visual media. The consumer may move in any direction within a three dimensional space in real-time, choosing to sample any of the media by inspection, handling or playing. Playing of the audio-visual media is by way of a virtual audio-visual player. In the case of a compact disc, for example, the compact disc may be examined, opened, the inlay card read and the compact disc itself listened to.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be describe by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective, the virtual reality audio-visual media shop;
Figure 2 illustrates the representation of a compact disc on a shelf;
Figure 3 illustrates the audio-visual player.
Referring to the drawing, the virtual reality representation of the audio-visual media takes the form of a shop as illustrated in Figure 1. The consumer may enter the shop by the door 1 whereby he/she is confronted by shelves 2 containing the audio-visual media 3. The consumer may move around in the three dimensional space using any standard input device, for example, a computer keyboard or mouse, or a specific input device such as a 6 directional joystick or headset and glove.
The consumer may choose to examine a particular product by its visual appearance. Examination may include close inspection of the product, handling of the product within the three dimensional space or playing of the product on an audio-visual media player. For example, the media may be in a container which may be opened to reveal the media itself 4. If the media is to be played, it may be inserted into the audio-visual player 5 and viewed on a screen 6 or listened to on speakers 7.
Claims (6)
1. A virtual reality, computer simulated method of representing audio-visual media. The consumer may move in any direction within in a three dimensional space in real-time, choosing to sample any of the media by inspection, handling or playing.
2. A virtual reality, computer simulated method of representing audio-visual media as claimed in Claim 1 wherein a virtual reality building is used to house the media.
3. A virtual reality, computer simulated method of representing audio-visual media as claimed in Claim 1 wherein virtual reality shelves are used to display the media.
4. A virtual reality, computer simulated method of representing audio-visual media as claimed in Claim 1 wherein close inspection of the media permits assessment of the size, shape, texture, layout and design of the media without handling.
5. A virtual reality, computer simulated method of representing audio-visual media as claimed in Claim 1 wherein handling of the media permits the movement and manipulation of the media within the three dimensional space.
6. A virtual reality, computer simulated method of representing audio-visual media as claimed in Claim 1 wherein a virtual reality audio-visual player is used to play audio-visual footage from the media.
