Description
1 METHOD OF LIMITING USE OF COPY FUNCTION IN A FACSIMILE DEVICE 2302433
The present invention relates to a method of limiting the use of a copy function in a facsimile device.
In general, facsimile devices have a copy function in addition to document transmitting and receiving functions.
Conventionally, the facsimile checks whether or not a copy function key is operated in an idle state and when the copy function key is operated, the facsimile device performs a copy function.
Thus, when many people, except the owner of the facsimile device or the person who manages it, use the facsimile device for copying, costly copy paper is wasted due to excessive and unnecessary use and toner is used excessively.
It is therefore, object of the invention to provide a method capable of limiting the performance of the copy function.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a method of limiting the use of a copy function in a facsimile device, comprising: determining whether a copy function key is operated; if so, awaiting the input of a first password; and 30 comparing the first password with a previously registered second password and if they are the same, performing a copy function.
Preferably, the method further comprises the initial step of registering the second password in'the facsimile device.
The present invention also extends to. a. facs 1 imile device comprising control means for:
determining whether a copy function key is operated; 2 if so, awaiting the input of a password; and comparing the input password with a previously registered password and if they are the same, causing the facsimile device to perform a copy function.
The control means may be a microprocessor.
suitably programmed These objects and features of the present invention will be 10 more apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment taken with the attached drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a block diagram of the construction of a facsimile device according to the present invention; Fig. 2 is a control flow chart illustrating the copy function of a conventional facsimile device; and Fig. 3 is a control flow chart illustrating the copy function limiting method according to the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a block diagram of the construction of a facsimile device according to the present invention. In Fig. 1, a central processing unit 20 controls each part of the device according to a predetermined program. A memory 10 stores programs including protocol data and recording data and accesses the data under control of the central processing unit 20. An operating panel OPE 30 has a plurality of function keys capable of generating various kinds of key data, in addition to keys performing the copy function of the device. A scanner 60 scans the image of a document placed in the device, converts the image into digital image data and provides it to the central processing unit 20. A modem 40 modulates the data output from the central processing unit 20 into analog data, and demodulates received analog data into digital data, the modem being under the control of the central processing unit 20. A network control unit NW 50 forms a telephone line speech loop under the control of the central processing unit 20 and interfaces the modem signal with the telephone line. A printer 70 prints the data received under the control of the central processing unit 20.
Fig. 2 is a control flow chart illustrating the copy 5 function of a conventional facsimile device. Since the conventional copy function is well known to one skilled in the art, it will not be explained here.
Fig. 3 is a control flow chart illustrating the copy 10 function of a facsimile device according to the present invention. This preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described.
At step 130 the password for copy function performance is input through the OPE 30 and is registered in the memory 10. Thereafter, at step 140 the central processing unit 20 checks whether a copy function key signal is operated. If a copy function key signal is input, at step 150 the central processing unit 20 awaits and senses the input of the password. At step 160 the central processing unit checks whether or not the password input is the same as the registered password. If the passwords are not the same, at step 180 an error is generated. On the other hand, if they are the same, at step 170 the central processing unit 20 ends the program and performs the normal copy function.
As mentioned above, the present invention is allows the copy function only upon input of the correct password. Thus, it is possible to limit the users of the copy function, and hence to reduce unnecessary copy use and cost. Thus, a facsimile device implemented according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention can be efficiently managed.
