Abstract
A drum strap to secure flat paper products in a shingled format around the circumference of a rotating drum, comprising a base strap 1, made from a continuous length of thermoplastic two ply polyester fabric with PVC middle and top coating, and machined surfaces to accommodate hook and loop fastening material e.g. 5 and a polyester ribbon 6. The above material specification allows repair to be effected to any part of the drum strap. One end of the base strap is rounded, punched, and steel rivets 2 are inserted to allow magnetic pick-up and so eliminate the need for an operator. This magnetic tongue if damaged can be removed and reproduced on-site thus shortening the belt without altering performance. The hook and loop material are stitched onto the base strap as a fastening. The polyester ribbon 6 is glued and stitched to the end of the drum strap to lengthen the strap and can be shortened or replaced as necessary.
Description
DRUM STRAP
This invention relates to a drum strap.
Drum straps are a form of binding used to secure flat paper products in a shingled format around the circumference of a rotating drum.
Drum straps currently in use need to be hand fed into a mechanical device in order to be wound and unwound from the drum.
These drum straps are relatively expensive, prone to damage as they are not made with a continuous base strap but in sections, are not repairable, and in addition they require an operator to make them function, thus adding to manpower costs.
According to the present invention there is provided a drum strap comprising a continuous thermoplastic laminate of two layers of polyester fabric with PVC middle and top coating, with a rounded magnetic front tip for automatic pick-up, hook and loop Velcro
has been attached as a holding device, and a polyester film ribbon has been fastened to the end as a means of increasing the strap length.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows the top view of the drum strap;
Figure 2 shows the side view of the drum strap;
Figure 3 shows the bottom view of the drum strap;
Referring to the drawing the drum strap comprises a continuous thermoplastic laminated two ply polyester and PVC coated strap 1.
As shown in Fig 1 and 3, the tip of the strap has been rounded and punched, and steel rivets 2 have been inserted in order to provide automatic magnetic pick-up.
On the, underside of the belt as illustrated in Fig 3, two hook welcroktabs 3 have been tzched to secure the tip of the drum strap onto the loop Velcrol shown in Fig 1.
On the underside of the belt as illustrated in Fig 3, a further length of hook velcro 4 has been attached teach edge of the strap as a further means of fixing to Velcro (mm) 5 as shown in Fig 1.
On the upper side of the belt, as illurstrated in Fig 1, there is then attached a length of loop welcroo,n each edge of the strap, which connects with hook selcrot4 as the strap is wound
around the circumference of the drum (not shown). This Welcrolis attached in recesses that have been machined away along each edge of the belt, reducing the polyester base strap to a single ply beneath the loop velcro
On the upper side of the belt shown in Fig 1, at the end the polyester base strap 1 is machined down to a single ply across its full width, and a polyester ribbon 6 is attached.
Claims (6)
1A drum strap comprising a continuous laminate of two layers
of polyester fabric with PVC middle and top coating, with a rounded maeWic front tip for automatic pick-up, hook and
loop Velerorhat been attached as a holding device, and a
polyester film ribbon has been fastened to the end as a
means of increasing the overall strap length.
2 A drum strap as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the base strap is
made from one continuous piece of material, thus removing
the possibility of joint failure between different sections
of the base strap.
3 A drum strap as claimed in Claims 1 and 2 wherein the entire
base strap is of a thermoplastic construction, thus allowing
repair of the base strap by the application of heat.
4 A drum strap as claimed in Claim 2, which allows for a
damaged magnetic tip to be cut off, and the cut end then to
be rounded, punched, and new rivets inserted on-site,
without altering the performance of the drum strap.
5 A drum strap as claimed in Claims 1 anE 2 with recesses
machined to accommodate the loop aelera d the polyester
ribbon, which are stitched onto the base strap as opposed to
glued, so making the overall construction stronger and less
prone to separation.
6 A drum strap substantially as described herein with
reference to Figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawing.
