Abstract

A device for securing and stretching a hessian backed carpet comprises:- ```a base plate (2) for securing to a floor surface, ```a top plate (1), a long edge of which is attached to a corresponding edge of the base plate via a hinge such that the bottom surface of the top plate may be brought into contact with the top surface of the base plate, ```a degree probe (3) which extends from the base plate and on which the top plate may rest in an inclined position above and at an angle to the base plate but which is pressed flat when the top plate and base plate are brought into contact, ```at least one interlocking catch (5) by which the top plate and base plate, when brought into contact, may be releasably locked in that position, ```and pins (4) extending from the top surface of the top plate and orientated away from the hinge by which pins the carpet may be secured to the top plate. A hessian backed carpet, if secured to the top plate when the latter is resting on the degree probe, is stretched when the top plate is pressed down into contact with the base plate.

Description

STRETCH 'N' FIX DESIGNED BY RICHARD BOSLEY THIS IDEA IS CONNECTED WITH THE INSTALLATION OF HESSIAN BACK CARPET. INSTALLATION OF HESSIAN BACK CARPET CONSISTS OF 3 STAGES AND MATERIALS.
1. FITTING PIN-WOOD (GRIPPER) AROUND THE BORDER OF THE COMPLETE AREA. THIS IS TACKED DOWN BY EITHER WOOD OR CONCRETE NAILS (DEPENDING ON SUBFLOOR).
2. FITTING UNDERLAY TO COVER WHOLE AREA AND CUT UPTO PIN-WOOD (GRIPPER).
3. FITTING OF HESSIAN BACK CARPET OVER GRIPPER AND UNDERLAY, THIS IS FITTED BY AN EXPERIENCED CARPET FITTER, WHO USES A CARPET STRETCHING TOOL, CALLED A KNEE-KICKER. THIS IS PLACED ABOUT 3" AWAY FROM THE PIN-WOOD (GRIPPER) AND HIT BY THE KNEE IN A KNEELING POSITION.
THIS MUST BE DONE EVERY 4" WIDE, ALL THE WAY AROUND THE ROOM, IN A GRID FASHION, TO STRETCH THE CARPET OFF OF ONE SIDE OF THE PIN-WOOD ONTO THE OPPOSITE SIDE.
IF AN INEXPERIENCED PERSON USES THIS TOOL AND DOES NOT KNOW THE PROCEDURE, IT IS A WASTED EXERCISE AND THE CARPET WOULD NOT BE STRETCHED ACROSS THE GRIPPER SUFFICENTLY. LEAVING THE CARPET LOOSE AND PRONE TO RIPPLES AND EXPANDING, REDUCING THE CARPETS LIFE EXPECTANCY.
THE IDEA I HAVE DESIGNED A STRETCH 'N' FIX CARPET GRIPPER, WHICH CAN BE FIXED TO EITHER WOOD OR CONCRETE SUBFLOORS AND WHEN FITTED STRETCHES THE CARPET WITHOUT NEEDING ANY FITTING TOOLS, SUCH AS A KNEE-KICKER.
ANYONE INEXPERIENCED WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM FITTING THEIR OWN CARPET, CUTTING OUT THE COST OF AND EXPERIENCED CARPET FITTER.
BY LIFTING THE TOP PLATE 1 BACKWARDS TOWARDS YOU, YOU WILL SEE HOLES LOCATED IN BASE 2 EVERY 4". PLACE FIXTURE APPROXIMATELY 1CM AWAY FROM WALL, WITH PINS POINTING TOWARDS WALL. BY USING EITHER CONCRETE OR WOOD NAILS (DEPENDING ON SUBFLOOR), LOCATE IN HOLES AND FIX TO FLOOR. A MASTIC CAN BE USED IF NEEDED TO STICK DIRECTLY TO FLOOR.
"STRETCH 'N' FIX" MUST BE FITTED ALL THE WAY AROUND THE PERIMETER OF ROOM, EXCEPT IN DOORWAYS WHERE A DOORBAR IS REQUIRED.
ONCE BASE 2 IS FIRMLY FITTED, LET TOP PLATE 1 REST AGAINST DEGREE PROBE 3, NOW FIT YOUR UNDERLAY AND CUT UPTO EDGE OF THE "STRETCH 'N' FIX" FIXTURE.
NOW YOU HAVE YOUR UNDERLAY AND BASE 2 SECURE, PLACE CARPET IN POSTION REQUIRED LEAVING NO EXPOSED AREAS. CUT OFF EXCESS CARPET LEAVING APPROXIMATELY 3" WASTE UP ALL WALLS.
YOU'RE READY TO FIT YOUR CARPET! BY STANDING ALONGSIDE THE WALL, PLACE YOUR FOOT SIDEWARDS AGAINST SKIRTING BOARD, NOW PUT YOUR BODY WEIGHT ONTO THAT FOOT CAREFULLY, BUT FIRMLY. DO NOT STAMP. (AT THIS STAGE FOOT PROTECTION IS RECOMMENDED), WHICH IN TURN PRESSES TOP PLATE 1 IN A DOWNWARD POSITION ON AND INTO BASE FIXTURE 2, INTER-LOCKING IT IN A FLAT POSITION *NOTE: BY PRESSING TOP PLATE 1 IN A DOWNWARD MOTION THE CARPET PINS 4 CATCH HOLD OF CARPET HESSIAN, PULLING IT TOWARDS THE SKIRTING BOARD OR WALL. THIS COMPLETE MOTION STRETCHES THE CARPET APPROXIMATELY 8 MILLIMETRES. REDUCE GAP BETWEEN TOP PLATE 1 AND BASE FIXTURE 2, IF CARPET IS OF A TIGHTER THAN AVERAGE WEAVE.
NOW TAKE YOUR EASY CUT KNIFE, PUSH ALONG PRESSING FIRMLY AGAINST SKIRTING AND BOLSTER DOWN THE EDGE OF CUT CARPET. TRIM OFF ANY FRAYS SHOWING.
"STRETCH N' FIX" ITS A RE-USABLE PRODUCT. THE TOP PLATE 1 CAN BE EASED UP BACK OUT OF THE INTER-LOCKING POSITION IF REQUIRED FOR FUTURE REFITTING.
THIS IS MADE UP OF A PLASTIC SUBSTANCE WITH FIVE MAIN FEATURES 1 TOP PLATE - PLASTIC 2mm HINGED FLAP WITH PINS FIXED.
2 BASE - PLASTIC 5mm DRILLED 4" WIDE FOR FIXING AND INTERLOCKING FEMALE CATCH CONNECTION.
3 DEGREE PROBE - KEEPS HEIGHT OF TOP PLATE 1 UP TO MAXIMISE OVER ALL STRETCHING CAPABILITY, THIS IS PRESSED FLAT WHEN FIXTURE IS COMPRESSED (PLASTIC).
4 PINS - WHEN CARPET IS LAYED ONTO THESE THEY q091CH INTO HESSIAN TO ALLOW STRETCHING TO COMMENCE. (NOTE: AS YET WITHOUT SEEING A DESIGNER, I CANNOT QUOTE WHETHER PINS WILL BE MADE OF PLASTIC OR ALUMINUM ).
5 INTERLOCKING CATCH - PLASTIC MALE DESIGNED TO FIX INTO BASE 2 FEMALE CONNECTION CAN BE RELEASED FOR CONVINENCE.
