Abstract

The coupling comprises a hollow body (10) having a throughway (11) to receive a tube and a collet (19) located in the throughway comprising an annular element (20) having integral resilient fingers (21) projecting into the throughway to engage an inserted tube. The throughway tapers (18) towards the open end to press the resilient fingers into gripping engagement with the tube with movement of the collet out of the throughway and release the tube with movement into the throughway. The collet extends outside the throughway with an out-turned encircling head (24) overlying an end of the coupling body for manipulating the collet. A T-section circlip (25) with a head (26) bridging the coupling body and collet head and a leg (27) engaging between the head and end of the coupling body prevents the head of the collet being pressed towards the end of the coupling body to release the tube.

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO TUBE COUPLINGS This invention relates to tube couplings in which an end of a tube is engaged and gripped automatically by insertion in the coupling.
The invention provides a tube coupling and comprising a hollow body having a throughway open at one end to receive a tube, a collet located in the open ended throughway comprising an annular element having integral resilient fingers projecting into the throughway to engage a tube extending through the collet into the throughway, the throughway tapering towards said open end to press the resilient fingers into gripping engagement with the tube with movement of the collet out of the throughway and release the tube with movement into the throughway, the annular part of the collet extending outside the throughway and having an out turned encircling head which overlies an end of the coupling body for manipulating the collet and a T-section circlip the head of which bridges the coupling body and collet head and the leg of which engages between the leg and end of the coupling body to prevent the head of the collet being pressed towards the end of the coupling body to release the tube.
Preferably, the tube coupling body has an encircling recess adjacent said end of the coupling body to receive one flank of the cross-member of the T, the other flank encircling the collet head.
The following is a description of a specific embodiment of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a sectional view through a tube coupling body having a collet to receive and grip a tube in the body, the lower part of the figure showing part of a circlip for controlling release of the collet; Figure 2 is an elevation view of the circlip of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a sectional view through the circlip on the line 3,3 on Figure 2.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown a tube coupling body indicated at 10 having a throughway 11 to receive and grip a tube, the outer periphery of which is indicated by the broken outline 12 in the coupling body. One end 13 of the coupling body has a reduced diameter opening 14 encircled by a bevelled entry or mouth 15. The throughway 11 has an enlarged diameter portion 16 spaced from the end 13 in which a seal 17 is located to seal with the outer surface of the tube 12.
Towards the end 13, the throughway is tapered to provide an inclined cam surface 18 which merges with the opening 14 into the throughway.
A collet indicated generally at 19 is mounted in the open end of the throughway comprising an annular part 20 from which a number of resilient fingers 21 project into the throughway. The fingers are formed with enlarged heads 22 which engage the paper cam surface 18 and which embody metal teeth 23 which project from the inner sides of the heads at an angle to bear against and grip a tube 12 located in the throughway.
Outside the throughway, the annular part of the collet is formed with an outturn encircling head 24 to facilitate manipulation of the collets. When a tube 12 is inserted into the coupling body through the collet, the surface of the tube is gripped by the metal teeth 23 of the resilient fingers of the collet and the collet is pushed inwardly with respect to the coupling body. When the tube is moved in a direction to withdraw from the coupling body, the collet is drawn with the tube and the engagement of the heads 22 of the collet with the tapered cam surface 18 forces the fingers into gripping engagement with the tube to restrain the tube against extraction from the throughway. When it is desired to release a tube, the head 24 of the collet is pressed inwardly of the coupling body thus moving the collet heads 22 beyond the cam surface 18 to release their gripping engagement with the tube. The tube can then be extracted from the coupling body.
To prevent inadvertent release of a tube from the coupling body, a T section circlip indicated generally at 25 is engaged between the head 24 of the collet and the end 13 of the coupling body as shown in the lower part of Figure 1. The circlip comprises a cross-piece 26 and a central leg 27. One flank of the cross-piece encircles the head 24 of the collet and the other flank engages in a recess 28 encircling the outer face of the coupling body adjacent the end face 13. The leg 27 of the circlip engages between the end 13 of the coupling body and the head 24 thus preventing the head 24 from being pushed against the end of the coupling body to release the gripping engagement of the collet with the tube as described earlier.
The T-section circlip is shown in elevation in Figure 2 and a cross-section through the circlip is shown in Figure 3.
