Abstract

A system for the automatic activation of the hazard warning lights of a motor vehicle when the engine of the vehicle stalls or the vehicle receives an impact through collision or breaks violently in an emergency.

Description

AN AUTOMATIC HAZARD WARNING LIGHT ACTIVATION SYSTEM FOR MOTOR VEHICLES The invention relates to road safety.
Stalled vehicles or those immobilised through a collision or emergency breaking procedure are a significant cause of traffic accidents. On urban roads for example the stalling of a vehicle whilst at traffic lights or a road junction or at any other time whilst in the traffic stream causes confusion to other road users and could result in an accident. Any immobilised vehicle caused by collision or emergency breaking on any road is a potential hazard. On A roads and motorways because of the higher speed involved the initial collision often results in further collisions resulting in multiple injury and fatalities with severe damage to thevehicles. The driver of a vehicle involved in a collision may be slow to or incapable of switching on the hazard warning lights as a result of the impact. If the hazard warning lights of a vehicle were automatically activated in such instances valuable reaction time would be gained in which avoiding action could be taken sooner saving life injury and damage.
The present invention provides a system whereby the hazard warning lights of a vehicle are automatically activated through the stalling of the engine, impact due to a collision or emergency breaking.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the drawing in which : Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of an automatic warning light activation system for motor vehicles.
The automatic activation of the hazard warning lights 9 is controlled by the automatic hazard warning light control unit 4.
This unit is located within the passanger compartment of the vehicle to reduce the chance of being damaged during collision and is equipped with its own power supply. Its construction is such that it is able to receive a signal from either the stall sensor 2 when the engine 1 has stalled or the impact emergency breaking sensor(s) 5 when the vehicle is in collision or breaks in an emergency and to subsequently activate the hazard warning lights 9 by activating the hazard warning light blinker unit 7.
The automatic hazard warning light control unit 4 is so constructed so as to be able to be deactivated by the manually operated automatic hazard warning light control unit deactivation facility 10 with the ignition 3 either on or off. The stall sensor 2 is of such a construction that it is able to send a signal to the automatic hazard warning light control unit 4 when the engine has stalled. It is situated optimally between between the engine 1 and the automatic hazard warning light control unit 4.The impact emergency breaking sensor 5 is so constructed that it is able to send a signal to the automatic hazard warning light control unit 4 when the vehicle receives an impact through a collision or breaks violently in an emergency The impact emergency breaking sesnsor(s) 5 is optimally situated within the front crush zone of a vehicle as well as perhaps the rear crush zone depending on vehicle type.
Its exact location and construction being optimal for the detection of the forces caused by impact due to collision or emergency breaking. The impact emergency breaking sensoring facility may if more suitable consist of two separate sensors.
In which case each separate sensor would be so constructed and situated as to optimally detect the forces set up when either the vehicle receives an impact due to collision or breaks in an emergency and send the appropriate signal to the automatic hazard warning light control unit.
A typical operating sequence when the engine of a motor vehicle stalls would be as follows. The automatic hazard warning light activation system is switched on when the ignition is switched on. When the engine stalls the stall sensor sends the appropriate signal to the automatic hazard warning light control unit which in turn activates the hazard warning light blinker unit which causes the hazard warning lights to function. The hazard warning lights will continue to blink until the engine is restarted. The system is switched off when the engine is switched off.
A typical operating sequence when a vehicle is in collision or breaks in an emergency is as follows. The automatic hazard warning light activation system is switched on when the ignition is switched on. On impact or emergency breaking the appropriate sensor will send a signal to the automatic hazard warning light control unit which will in turn activate the hazard warning light blinker unit causing the hazard warning lights to function.
The hazard warning lights will continue to function until the manual automatic hazard light control unit deactivation facility causes the hazard warning lights to stop functioning. This may even take place when the ignition has been switched off. The automatic hazard warning light activation system is switched off when the ignition is switched off.
The purpose of the automatic hazard warning light control deactivation facility 10 is stop the hazard warning lights functioning. This may be achieved by either the deactivation of the hazard warning light control unit or instructing the hazard warning light control unit to deactivate the hazard warning light blinker unit whilst remaining activated. In either case the automatic hazard warning light control unit would be so constructed as to be able to carry out such functions.
