Abstract

In order to adjust the height of a source of electromagnetic radiation above the level of liquid on which a buoyant body floats and supports the source, the body is formed with a first buoyant portion 11 and a second portion 12 which is adjustably mounted on the first portion 11. As shown infrared emitting sources are contained in a dome 13 at the top of the second portion and energised by batteries disposed in a compartment 14. The first buoyant portion 11 is of ellipsoid shape and made of plastics material.

Description

BIACOM This invention relates to a beacon for emitting electromagnetic radiation in a water environment.
Buoys are used to mark locations and comprise a buoyant body, a source of electromagnetic radiation mounted on the body and means for energising the source. The buoyant body is usually of fixed construction, so that once the buoy has been constructed the light source has a single unadjustable relationship to the surface of the water in which the buoyant body floats.
The present invention improves on this arrangement by providing a buoyant body comprising a first buoyant portion and a second portion which is adjustably mounted on the first portion, the source being mounted on the second portion so that the relationship of the source and the second portion can be adjusted relative to the first portion. With this arrangement, the height of the source above the surface of the water can be adjusted.
In a preferred arrangement the second portion extends through the first portion, the source being mounted at or adjacent one end of the second portion and the means for energising the source being mounted at the other end of the second portion. The energising means preferably comprises a battery compartment which in use contains batteries for energising the source.
An example of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying diagram of an infrared emitting flotation beacon.
The beacon comprises a first portion 11 which is a buoyant body of ellipsoid shape, formed in this example of lightweight plastics material which does not become waterlogged. The ellipsoid is formed with a central cylindrical aperture, through which passes a second portion 12, of cylindrical shape, on which is mounted at its top end a dome 13 containing infrared emitting sources such as diodes and at its bottom end there is formed a battery compartment 14 for containing batteries to energise the infrared sources. The batteries, when in position, provide ballast for the device, maintaining the second portion in an approximately vertical position with the dome uppermost in order to give the dome maximum visibility above the surface of the water.
Control devices (not shown) are included within the second portion to control the infrared radiation, for example to energise the sources continuously or intermittently according to preselected codes. The control device may comprise a radio receiver for receiving control instructions to control the energisation of the source.
The construction of the device facilitates its use as a beacon to be dropped from aircraft into water. The control device for controlling the energisation of the dome can be set in the aircraft before the drop, as can the relative positions of the first and second portions in order that the height of the dome above the water surface can be controlled.

Claims (4)

1. A buoyant body comprising a first buoyant portion, a second portion which is adjustably mounted on the first portion, and an electromagnetic radiation source mounted on the second portion so that the relationship of the source and the second portion can be adjusted relative to the first portion.
2. A body as claimed in claim 1 wherein the second portion extends through the first portion, the source being mounted at or adjacent one end of the second portion and the means for energising the source being mounted at the other end of the second portion.
3. A body as claimed in claim 2 wherein the energising means comprises preferably a battery compartment which in use contains batteries for energising the source.
4. A buoyant body substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
