Abstract

A slug or snail deterrent comprises an aluminium sheet one edge of which has a series of cuts, each adjacent pair of cuts forming therebetween a tab of material, alternate tabs being bent at 90 degrees. The deterrent can be placed around plant pots or pushed into the ground around outdoor plants.

Description

Deterrent to slugs and snails This invention relates to a way of preventing slugs or snails from eating plants in pots. Small individual plants, ones in cloches, or plants in a particular area.
This works because strips of aluminium have a top which is cut 9mm deep every 2.5mm and every other segment is bent forward at roughly right angles to the straight one. The type of aluminium used is that which forms the body of a "coke" can or other similar cans.
The strips are made in a circular form with a diameter of 10cm x 3.5cm for a small dividual plants. Strips for pots are narrower being 2cm and can be fitted with "BLU-TAC' lengths cut as required.
For larger areas straight pieces size 21.5cm x 6.5cm are placed end to end in previously dampened soil to enclose chosen area. Also pieces can be placed at open ends of cloches.
About 6mm ofthe strips are pushed into the ground and firmed in. The 21.5cm x 6.5cm strips are in small lengths for easier handling. A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1. Shows strip at an angle looking down.
Figure 2. Illustrates bent down segment next to the upright one at the edge of strip.

Claims (6)

Claims
1. This method of cutting aluminium strips to a depth of 9mm every 2.5mm along the top and bending every other segment at an approx. right angle is a very effective deterrent to snails and slugs and stops them approaching any plant behind the barrier.
2. Slugs and snails are unharmed.
3. The strips can be re-assembled and used from year to year.
4. When strips are coloured brown they are unobtrusive.
5. Ecologically safe.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1. A slug and snail deterrent comprising strips of aluminium which has the top cut into segments the depth of each segment being 9mm by 2.5mm in width and every other segment is then bent down to a right angle, this being the front of the section, and these sections, when placed end to end, can enclose any desired area and makes a very efficient barrier against slugs and snails.
2. A slug and snail deterrent as claimed in claim 1 should be made of fine aluminium as the sharpness of the double row of segments is sufficient to warn all slugs and snails to keep away.
3. A slug and snail deterrent as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 is unobtrusive when the strips of aluminium are coloured brown.
4. A slug and snail deterrent as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3 can be re-assembled and used for many seasons.
5. A slug and snail deterrent as claimed in any preceding claim is easily inserted into well dug and moistened soil and firmed in, provided each strip has a height of not less than 6.5cm by 21.5 cm in width.
6. A slug and snail deterrent substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
