Abstract

A steering and propulsion system or a toy vehicle with or without wings comprising a handle with attached rod connected to a steering mechanism and enabling a person to simultaneously steer and propel the vehicle in question. The steering rod may be of an adjustable length and/or height. The rod may be fitted with switches or mechanisms to control other features on the vehicle, including steering, the operation of the horn, lights, engine or engine noise, or other features, operated by battery or dynamo.

Description

Steerable Toy Vehicle This invention relates to a steerable toy vehicle.
There exist many types oftoy vehicle with attatched steering-mechanism; radio- controlled, manual push-along, and battery-operated, to name a few.
The present invention provides a wheeled toy vehicle with two or more axles and a steering mechanism to steer front or rear wheels,or all wheels. The steering-mechanism can comprise of any of the known principles, including rack and pinion.
Connected to the steering-mechanism,either directly or via a link-rod(s) and joint(s), is a steeni-rod. This may be rigid or flexible, or a combination of both, but is stiff enough to propel the vehicle easily. Suitable supports or sleeving for the rod are provided. The height and/or the length of the rod is adjustable. A handgrip is provided.
Optional controls may be incorporated into the steering-rod or handgrip to operate attachments on the vehicle such as horn, lights, engine or engine noise, or other features, operated by battery or dynamo. A motor may be used to assist propulsion, whilst retaining steering control with the steering-rod.
Alternatively, the rod and handgrip may be used for propulsion only, with steering being carned out by cable or hydraulic means, or by a dedicated motor. In all cases, the controls for such steering would reside in the steeringrod or handgrip.
An example ofthe invention is shown in the accompanying. drawings: Figeres la and Ib show examples of types of steering-rods connected to types of steering-mechanisms.
Pigure 2 illustrates another type of connection, and demonstrates the concept ofthe steerabie toy vehicle.
Referring to the drawings, the handgrip (1) turns the steer rod (2) which in tum drives the steering mechanism (7) and so turns the wheels of the vehicle. The steering rod is supported according to it's type by a suitable sleeve and/or brackets (3).Height adjustment(5) is by means of the flexibility of the rod in fig.lb and by means ofthe joint (6)in fig. la and 2. Figure la also shows a telescopic option (4)for the steering rod, and use of a link-rod(8) to attatch the steering-rod(2) to the steering mechanism (7),via a joint(6).

Claims (2)

  1. Steering and Propulsion System for Toy Vehicle (1) A steering and propulsion system for a toy vehicle, with or without wings, connected to the vehicle in order to steer and propel it. (See figure2) (2) A steering and propulsion system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the rod connects directly to the steering mechanism. (See figure
  2. 2.) (3) A steering and propulsion system as claimed in any preceeding claim, wherein the rod connects to the steering mechanism via a universal joint and shaft, or other flexible rod and mechanism. (See figures la and 1b.) (4) A steering and propulsion system as claimed in any preceeding claim, wherein the rod is sectional or telescopic with a locking mechanism to vary the length. (See figure la.) (5) A steering and propulsion system as claimed in any preceeding claim, wherein a steering shaft travels horizontally along the vehicle before turning upwards towards the handle. The complete rod may be flexible in this instance or connected at the point of turning up with a flexible or universal joint or coupling. (See figures la and Ib.) (6) A steering and propulsion system as claimed in any preceeding claim, wherein a switch(es) or lever(s) or other mechanism is provided on the rod or handle, for the operator to control one or more attachments or features on the vehicle. This could include steering of the vehicle by hydraulic or cable means, in place of the rod.
    (7) A steering and propulsion system as claimed in any preceeding claim, wherein the rear or front wheels or both are powered by battery-operated motor to assist propulsion. In the case of a winged vehicle or boat, this might power a propellor(s) instead of wheels.
    (8) A steering and propulsion system as claimed in any preceeding claim, wherein the steering mechanism is self-centering.
    (9) A steering and propulsion system as claimed in any preceeding claim, wherein the steering rod is sleeved or bracketed, or otherwise supported.
    (10) A steering and propulsion system as claimed in any preceeding claim, wherein the rod and handle are used to propel and steer a vehicle with wings and/or a hull, on the ground and/or in the air and/or in water. In this event the steering mechanism would control ailerons and/or a rudder of the vehicle separately, or in addition to, the steering of any wheels.
    (11) A steering and propulsion system substantially as described herein, with reference to figures la, lb and 2 of the accompany drawings.
